Το βιβλίο της ζούγκλας είναι μια συλλογή διηγημάτων του νομπελίστα συγγραφέα Ράντγιαρντ Κίπλινγκ. δημοσιεύτηκε ενώ ζούσε στο Βερμόντ σε διάφορες εφημερίδες και περιοδικά μεταξύ 1893 και 1894. Οι αρχικές δημοσιεύσεις περιέχουν εικονογραφήσεις, μερικές από τον πατέρα του συγγραφέα, John Lockwood Kipling.
Ο Κίπλινγκ, γεννημένος στην Ινδία, έζησε τα πρώτα παιδικά του χρόνια στη Βομβάη, για να επιστρέψει εκεί σε ηλικία είκοσι ετών και να εργαστεί ως δημοσιογράφος για τα επόμενα έξι χρόνια: οι πιο γνωστές από αυτές τις ιστορίες παραμένουν στην πραγματικότητα οι ιστορίες που αφηγούνται τις περιπέτειες του το "man cub" με το όνομα Mowgli, που εγκαταλείφθηκε στην ινδική ζούγκλα και υιοθετήθηκε από μια αγέλη λύκων.
Μεταξύ άλλων παραμυθιών, οι πιο γνωστές είναι πιθανώς το Rikki-tikki-tavi (η ιστορία μιας ηρωικής μαγκούστας) και το Toomai των ελεφάντων (η ιστορία ενός νεαρού βοσκού ελεφάντων). Ακολούθησε το δεύτερο Βιβλίο της Ζούγκλας το 1895, συμπεριλαμβανομένου πέντε ακόμη ιστοριών με τον μικρό Mowgli, μεταξύ άλλων.
