The chest of seven pearls (Melody Time in the American original) is the 10th animated feature film produced by Walt Disney in 1948 and is composed of 7 musical cartoons, along the lines of Fantasy fabric, even if with less artistic demands. Directed by Clyde Geronimo, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske and Jack Kinney, it lasts 70 minutes and includes the following episodes:
Once Upon a Wintertime
That is, "Once upon a time there was time in winter" is an evocative short film, which transports the viewer into the magical white world of winter. The protagonists are a young couple of lovers, who after a ride in a gig they perform in spectacular pirouettes, skating on the ice, in which they engrave scratches in the shape of hearts. At a certain point the ice sheets break and the girl risks drowning. She is rescued by the intrepid boy and the help of the bunnies and the cart horse, before the girl can fall into the waterfall.
The short film is a tribute to the musical piece Il Volo del bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov, directed for the occasion by Freddy Martin and his orchestra. Here a small bumblebee drawn with a brush escapes the pressing musical notes that turn from flowers into piano keys and then into a musical snake, which tries to catch the poor insect. This cartoon takes up the style of the previous Fantasia film, where animated drawings are used to represent variations in notes and musical feelings.
Johnny Apple seed
It is a cartoon that tells the story of John Chapman, a wandering philosopher, who tries to bring peace to the people by sowing apple trees. Villages can thus cook sweets and delicious dishes with the juicy fruit and give rise to parties and dances where the inhabitants of other villages and tribes of Red Indians can also participate.
It is the story of a small boat that when it grows up wants to become a tug like its father Big Toot, that is, it has to tow ships out to sea. Unfortunately, his inexperience will take him to the high seas, amidst gigantic waves and dangerous hurricanes. Eventually little Little Toot will manage to rescue a ship and have it dock in port, where his proud father awaits him.
Short films follow Trees where Joyce Kilmer's poetry is animated, All the fault of the samba where Donald dances with Josè carioca just like in the movie "The three caballeros" and finally Pecos Bill which tells the legendary story of the American myth, raised by a pack of coyotes up to his glorious career as a cow boy riding his Sputafuoco horse.
