THE YEARS OF SGT. KIRK AND PRATT'S JOURNEY IN THE EUROPEAN COMIC STRIP

40 years after the birth of Sgt. Kirk, on whose pages A Ballad of the Salt Sea (the first adventure of the sailor created by Hugo Pratt) came to life, the human and artistic adventure is reconstructed with a traveling exhibition, a series of conferences, two widely illustrated volumes and a DVD.

It will be inaugurated 11 May 2007 at 11.00, at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Education, C.so Podestà 2 in Genoa, the exhibition "KIRK, the roots of Corto Maltese", on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the character and of the periodical that gave him birth. The exhibition offers a new and original opportunity to remember the genesis and the context of one of the most significant creative adventures of Italian and European comics. A particularly rich occasion for lovers of Pratt and of the great international comics, which combines an affectionate celebration, a detailed historical reconstruction and a lively reflection on the relationship between Pratt's success and the culture of his time.

In a journey that is both real and symbolic, the exhibition, publications and conferences will present the different aspects of an extraordinary cultural adventure. The initiatives start from Genoa, because here, a few steps from the headquarters of the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Hugo Pratt drew the first sketches. The Italian cities that hosted and relaunched the success of Corto Maltese will then continue in Lucca and Milan, and will retrace the triple journey made by Sgt. Kirk and Hugo Pratt: the existential journey of two men - Pratt and the publisher Ivaldi - tirelessly creative ; the editorial journey of one of the most important European comic magazines; and Corto Maltese's great journey into Italian and European culture. Furthermore, the relationship between Hugo Pratt and Florenzo Ivaldi will be at the center of a special conference on the theme of cultural patronage, which will take place as part of the Mantua Literature Festival.

The exhibition was born from an idea of ​​Epierre for Lucca City of Comics, in collaboration with the National Museum of Comics (MUF) and the University of Genoa, and takes place under the patronage of the Liguria Region and the Municipality of Genoa. .

THE GENOESE STAGE - 11 MAY 2007

The exhibition itinerary begins in Genoa, which will be enriched with other exhibition sections in the planned stages in Lucca and Milan, and will then reach Bologna, Mantua, Rome and Verona.
The Genoese stage, set up on the terraces of the building of C.so Podestà 2, exhibits 12 totems with images and passages that tell the creative and editorial adventure of Hugo Pratt, his artistic career, the meeting with Florenzo Ivaldi.

At 11.00 am presentation of the first section of the exhibition, The journey of an author and his chosen editor, dedicated to the encounter and friendship between two men, Hugo Pratt and Florenzo Ivaldi, from whose collaboration the magazine Sgt Kirk was born. Pratt, in search of success in Italy after the successful South American season, and Ivaldi, patron in love with comics, in the ferment of Genoa in the sixties, together they design a magazine expression of a dream and a shared love: the one for the great adventure designed. At the center of the exhibition, a series of photographs, documents and various materials relating to the first issue of the magazine, which launches the Genoese partnership on the national limelight.

At 15.30 pm the "talk show" Florenzo Ivaldi and Hugo Pratt will take place: the discourses of the adventure, which will address the relationship between the meeting of the two men, the ferments of Genoese culture in the XNUMXs and the contribution made by authors and intellectuals of the city to the growth of a new critical attention towards adventure comics. To remember and understand the story of that journey that, from Sgt. Kirk and from Genoa, led Pratt and Corto Maltese to the center of European comics.
Pino Boero, Giulio Cesare Cucciolini, Claudio Bertieri, Gianni Bono, Pier Luigi Gaspa, Renato Genovese, Giovanni Russo, Matteo Stefanelli will participate in the discussion.
