November 26 - December 5, 2009

Milan 25 November 2009 - When art inspires art: exactly 72 years ago "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", the first ever animated feature film, was released in cinemas all over the world, a masterpiece destined to go down in history as "madness by Walt Disney ". An epic enterprise that cost its creator a million and a half dollars at the time, a mortgage on the house and months of hard work: a madness, in fact, in which Walt's tireless genius never stopped believing fighting against prejudices and obstacles of all kinds. Starting next December 2nd, this masterpiece returns to shine, completely restored and remastered, in high definition Blu-ray: here is the opportunity to celebrate this magnificent journey with an exhibition entirely dedicated to the creativity of young artists inspired by the Disney masterpiece. The choice could only fall on the forge of creativity par excellence: the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. A jury - made up of professors from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, the Disney Academy and the President of the Atelier Gluck Arte Association in Milan - selected the 31 most deserving works from among the many works presented by the young Brera artists. finally, the winner came out. The works were created by a selected number of students, indicated by the respective teachers of the Academy of Fine Arts, coming from the scenography, painting, sculpture and decoration courses.
The "Freedom to create" competition, of which the homonymous exhibition is the final act that presents the results to the public, was organized in collaboration by the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Fondazione Cineteca Italiana and The Walt Disney Company, reserved to the students of the Academy, it had as its theme the creation of works freely inspired by the film "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" placing itself as a tribute to the freedom to create, to the fire of creativity and to the desire to believe in the artistic expression of today's young people. Just as 72 years ago someone believed in the talent of the then very young Walt Disney, today we want to give children a concreated opportunity to express their artistic inspiration by paying homage to this path. The works in competition, of which thirty-one have reached the final selection and are exhibited in the exhibition, were made in free technique in the maximum format of 100x100 cm and are the result of a series of interpretations and insights generated by the in-depth vision of the feature film and then freely reworked: painted canvases, photographs and three-dimensional installations thus create a unique path on display that leads the visitor by the hand to discover the world of Snow White revisited by the eye of the modern artist. To discover that, in the end, Snow White is still the embodiment of purity besieged by Evil and that the house of the dwarves is still the safe haven in which we would like to hide. And what happens to the apple? Just come on display to find out!
The jury, made up of representatives of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, the Disney Academy and the Atelier Gluck Arte Association in Milan, decreed the winning works. First the one entitled "New Light" by Giulia Cannella (21 years old). A dreamlike work, a real installation created with the theatrical technique of overlapping backdrops, which has as its subject the little house of the seven dwarfs immersed in an atmosphere that recalls the theme of sleep, of the passage to new life. This is how the winner describes it:
"A child falls asleep to wake up, with a kiss, woman. It is the so-called liminal moment. A rite of passage. Oneiric sense of waiting, in a daydream. The fog that surrounds her is like amniotic fluid. Moment of birth. . If the 'first light' is lived in the moment of coming into the world, Snow White is invested by a 'new light' in her life. The work is constructed in such a way as to enhance its transparency and lightness. Symbolizing light and ephemerality of the moment lived by Snow White ".
Second winner is Sara Romani who with the work "Biancaneve sono io", a photograph that represents her in profile and in dim light with a small apple drawn on the neck, wants to represent the passage from the enchanted world of her naivety to that of maturity. The apple, the pivotal symbol of the narrative in the film, represents for Sara something that has marked the life of Snow White allowing her to become what she is, that is, a woman. Matteo Sturba, in third place according to this jury, has created a print work on aluminum working instead on the "relationship of otherness that is established between the two aesthetic canons represented by Snow White and Grimilde", commented the young man, "and the envy of the stepmother who animates this relationship ".
"Believing in one's own ideas, in the Fantasy that leads to creating 'Art', leaving an indelible mark in the life of each of us. Thoughts made real by Walter Elias Disney", argued Professor G. Mariani Director of the Academy of Fine. Arti di Brera, "a tangible example for the student facing a culturally important path. 'Freedom to create' is a highly interesting opportunity to tell their work, to express a private intention in a vision public. A heartfelt thanks goes to those who participated in the realization of this valuable event ".
The exhibition, set up at Atelier Gluck Arte in Milan (Via Gluck 45), opens to the public on November 26 and will remain open until December 5 (free admission, from 10.00 to 18.00). During the entire opening period, the public will be able to vote for their favorite work by means of a coupon directly at the exhibition: the audience's prize will consist of a symbolic golden apple that from a symbol of the fairy tale is transformed into a tribute to the most beautiful work: from Snow White to Paris!
