France XNUMXth century. Le Chevalier D'Eon could appear as yet another anime set shortly before or during the French Revolution, see the famous Lady Oscar but also The Seine Star or D'Artegnan and the Musketeers, titles that have rightfully entered the imagination of well over a generation. However, unlike the products mentioned above, the author Tow Ubukata seems not to have been fascinated by the sumptuous and decadent events of the Palace of Versailles, but by a historically existent character. A Chevalier D'Eon is, in fact, lived for real. Skilled with the sword, he also excelled in economic sciences but, what is truly singular, he was hired by the King and forced to pretend to be a woman to perform the function of diplomat and spy.
This singular figure greatly impressed Ubukata, who has now become one of the most important and recognized writers of science fiction at home, who decided to enrich this singular story also guided by the suggestions that the century of enlightenment brings with it. It is, in fact, precisely in this historical period, or during the Enlightenment, that centuries-old traditional values collapse and new ways of living and new social theories are born one after the other.
Science and faith, magic and reason, are the heart of this cartoon. For this reason Chevalier D'Eon is a title that manages to mix various suggestions and different genres. From the beginning, with the discovery of the body of Lia, the protagonist's sister, locked in a coffin and dragged by the current of the Seine and, on whose coffin strange and mysterious words are engraved, it is clear, as Mario Rumor rightly noted, that we are more close to Twin Peaks (Who killed Lia? Why?) than Lady Oscar. Episode after episode above all the suspense and mystery grows in a story that has as its source of inspiration the structure of the American TV series and the care in characterizing the psychology of the characters, all peppered with supernatural elements. The latter are also the distinguishing marks of Le Chevalier D'Eon.
Finally, do not forget the care of costumes and settings that are very rich from a scenographic point of view, whose impeccable performance was also possible thanks to a skilful use of computer graphics. However, as Ubakata pointed out, Le Chevalier D'Eon is indeed a product that must stimulate the senses but too flashy elements have been deliberately avoided, leaving the story and the aspect of the historical drama to prevail instead.

PLOT:
D'Eon de Beaumont, in search of the truth about the death of his sister Lia and the mysterious paranormal phenomena he witnessed, is followed by Robin, a young page of the Queen, Durand, a skilled swordsman and Teillagory, the old sword master of the Beaumont brothers. The "Four Musketeers", as they are nicknamed in honor of the knights of bygone days, follow D'Eon as loyal and courageous companions.
