Lilo & Stitch is one of the most successful animated films of recent years to the point of deserving an Oscar nomination in 2003. Produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, which created it using the traditional animation technique and only in some cases the computer graphics (for space ships), is based on the idea and direction of the talented Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, present in the staff of "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King".
The story begins on a distant planet in a distant galaxy. Here we find the Galactic Federation, which accuses the scientist Jumba Jookiba of having created a very dangerous being with genetic manipulation, whose sole purpose is that of destruction. The much feared alien has been captured and is similar to a blue koala, with six legs, two antennae on its head and a strange crest on its back: its name is Experiment 626 and it is endowed with immeasurable strength, it resists bullets, fire , can see in the dark and possesses an intelligence superior to that of many supercomputers. For this reason he is destined to be sent to solitary confinement on a distant asteroid. However, the little alien, taking advantage of all his cunning and skill, manages to free himself during the journey and take possession of a spaceship, which will direct him to planet earth and precisely to the Hawaiian Islands, located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Here we find Lilo, a five-year-old orphan who lives with her sister Nani. Lilo has a sweet and sensitive character, but shows a certain rebellion towards her classmates, who tend to marginalize her, due to her social situation. With Nani, it can't be said that he is having a good time, as his older sister has quite a few problems managing the house, to the point that the creepy social worker Cobra Bubbles (who looks like Mike Tyson), threatens to take Lilo and entrust it to an orphanage. Although there is some small friction between Lilo and Nani, the two cannot do without each other and define themselves as "ohana" which in Hawaiian means "family" and nothing can separate them. That same night they see the extraterrestrial spaceship crash like a shooting star on their island and Lilo, eager for affection, expresses the desire to have a friend who is always with her. Meanwhile, the Galactic Federation instructs the alien Pleakley to bring Experiment 626 back to their planet and for this he will have to be assisted by the scientist Jumba Jookiba, the only one able to know all the characteristics of the dangerous alien.
The two then head to earth, where disguised as Earthmen they will try to capture Experiment 626. Meanwhile, the little blue alien is hit by a truck and taken to a kennel. He decides to be adopted to escape capture, therefore he modifies his body by eliminating two legs, the antennae and the quills, to look similar to a dog. He is adopted by Lilo, who finds him adorable, even if with his strange appearance he terrifies everyone: his name will be Stitch. It is not long before Stitch demonstrates all his vocation for destruction, tearing everything he finds in the house of the two sisters into a thousand pieces and for this reason he creates several problems for Nani, who also loses his job because of him, aggravating his position in the towards the social worker. As the days go by and with Lilo's love, Stich will learn the value of "Ohana" and feel like the ugly duckling, alone but with the desire to feel welcomed by an adoptive family.
Together with Lilo he will learn how to eat ice cream, dance Hawaiian dances, play guitar and listen to songs by Elvis Presley, which Lilo loves. Just as Lilo, Stitch, Nani and her friend are having fun surfing the waves, Jumba and Pleakley try to catch Stitch, who in turn clings to Lilo, risking drowning her, but is saved by her sister. . Cobra, however, saw the danger that Lilo ran, so he decides to separate Lilo from Nani. Stitch is sad that he has created all these problems and decides to leave. Lilo manages to escape from the social worker's car to look for Stitch and finding him in a wood in his true form, she realizes that he is an alien. Meanwhile, Captain Gantu of the Galactic Federation arrives, who, having taken note of the failure of Jumba and Pleakley, decides to capture Stitch and from here on we will see a succession of breathtaking actions and chases aboard spaceships, where the little Stitch will demonstrate all his worth. and his love for Lilo, whom he now regards as part of his new family.
The strength of the film are undoubtedly the characters all characterized very well, with rounded and soft features, starting with little Lilo, who transmits tenderness and sympathy, but above all by Stitch, who has now taken a respectable place in the Olympus of Disney characters, thanks to his mimicry and stunning expressiveness. It also affects the animation and the fluid and natural movements, which give us beautiful choreographies of Hawaiian dances. The colorful and fascinating backgrounds of tropical landscapes have been hand painted and contribute to the tender and naive atmosphere of the tale. Of note is the soundtrack, which in addition to Elvis Presley's "ever greens", is remembered for the original music that is well integrated into the context of Alan Silvestri. Several home video sequels were created from the film: Try again, Stitch!, Lilo & Stitch 2: what a disaster Stitch! and the recent Leroy & Stitch.
