The cartoon Baldios (original title Uchu senshi Baldios) was produced by Ashi Productions and Kokusai Eigasha in 1980 for a total of 39 episodes, but in Italy only 31 were broadcast in 1982, on various local broadcasters.
The story begins on planet S-1, thousands of light years away from the center of the galaxy. Due to radioactive pollution, the military made their planet unlivable, therefore the population was forced to live underground. Scientists try in every way to solve the problem, designing a system that purifies their atmosphere, but the tyrant Theo Gattler decides to embark on a journey in search of other worlds to conquer in order to transfer their population.
Gattler's spaceship is capable of traveling distances of thousands of light years with hyperspace leaps, which allow it to cross the fourth dimension and inside it can contain a considerable army of soldiers. Gattler eliminates the scientists who oppose his plan and among them is Professor Reigan. Before being killed by Milan, he will make his son Marin escape aboard the spaceship Pulser Burn, in order to thwart Gattler's plans. Before leaving, Marin manages to avenge his father's death by killing Milan. Due to a breakdown, the Pulser Burn suffers a time warp and arrives on the moon, just as the armies of S-1 commanded by Aphrodia, Milan's sister, begin to strike the Grounders with their powerful weapons. He is rescued by the inhabitants of the moon base, who initially hold him captive as a spy and brought him to earth at the Blue Fixer base. Here he will meet Commander Bannister and the scientist Era Queenstain, who prepare special troops for the defense of the earth.
The alien Marin will also make the acquaintance with the pilots of the team where we find Oliver Jack, the blond American pilot of the Baldy Prize, Raita Hokuto the robust pilot of the Cater Ranger and in particular Jamie Hoshino, the only one (together with Professor Queenstain) who he will understand Marin's loyalty, despite Oliver and Raita's initial mistrust and suspicion. At the head of the Blue Fixer base is the World Federation, chaired by Morgan who, however, does not look kindly on the autonomous initiatives of Bannister and his companions. After several attacks, the Blue Fixer base realizes the overwhelming technological superiority of the aliens, so Professor Queenstain decides to use part of the Pulser Burn, to enhance it with the Baldy Prize and the Cater Ranger.
This union will give rise to a gigantic robot capable of flying in hyperspace and facing the powerful enemy armies: his name will be Baldios and will be piloted by Marin, who will be granted the trust, just when he will have to save the life of Oliver and Raita. Thanks to that episode, Oliver and Raita understand the true intentions of Marin who gets their esteem and so the team can start a series and close collaboration. When the cold and determined commander Aphrodia learns of Marin's arrival, she has one more reason to try to destroy Baldios, as she must avenge the death of her brother Milan. In reality Aphrodia is a victim of Gattler, as he was the instigator of the murder of his parents, because they hindered his political ascent. Raised since childhood, together with her brother Milan she became under the control of Gattler, who entrusted her with the task of supreme commander of the Aldebaran army.
In addition to the powerful shuttles capable of traveling in subspace, Aldebaran's army will make use of powerful robots such as the Bigoss, the Megazorzer and the Mozer. These will have bread for their teeth when they have to confront Baldios, who fights using a powerful sword that he extracts from his belt, laser cannons placed on the shoulders and the Thunder Flash, a powerful beam that comes out from the plate placed in the chest. It also has a beam that starts from the horns and a heavy club, which it rotates to give it more power. The surprise ending is beautiful and very current, as far as environmental issues are concerned ... if anyone has seen "Planet of the Apes", they will be able to guess it.
