Starting from Monday 3 February 2020 at 7,50 am on Italia 1, the Japanese animated series will be broadcast "Cotton flakes for Jeanie"(Japanese original title" Kaze no naka no shojo kinpatsu no Jeanie "). The anime was made by Nippon animation and consists of 52 episodes each lasting 22 minutes and is based on the novel by Shiro Ishinomori, inspired by the song "Jeannie With the Light Brown Hair"and the biography of Stephen Foster written in 1854. His television debut took place on October 15, 1992 on TV Tokyo, while in Italy it was broadcast for the first time in June 1994, again on Italia 1. The anime is a remake of the series "Long haired Jeanie"of the 70s, even if the story is very different.

The story is set in Pennsylvania in 1838, between cotton plantations and during the Civil War, when racial discrimination took place in America and there was a struggle for the liberation of African Americans from slavery.

The protagonist is Jeanie MacDowell, a beautiful girl with long blond hair, who has a passion for music and in particular for the piano, which her mother teaches her to play with a lot of perseverance and patience. Jeanie's inseparable friends are Stephen, who likes to compose music with harmonica and Bill, an Afro-American boy who is very good at playing the banjo. Together the three boys form a perfect musical trio, which happily passes the evenings. Unfortunately, these moments of happiness for Jeanie are broken by the untimely death of her mother due to an illness. Contrary to Jeanie's will, her father remarries and the first conflicts between Jeanie and her stepmother are not long in coming. Jeanie nourishes the dream and the vocation to cure people suffering from serious illnesses, in memory of her mother, for this and also for an always tense family climate, she decides to leave for the boarding school in order to learn the profession of nurse. Life in boarding school proves very difficult, due to her classmates mocking her and the headmistress who accuses her unfairly, but her friend Stephen is always by her side.

Once she is certified to be a nurse, Jeanie returns to her country with Stephen and here they find their friend Bill, sad for not being able to play his banjo anymore, despite being well integrated into a jazz band. .

Jeanie has to leave again to do her internship at an orphanage in a small town, directed by a very strict doctor. The villagers do not look favorably on the "rebellious" children of the orphanage and put pressure on the mayor to close the institute. Jeanie will do what she can to save the children and will try to recover the money necessary to prevent the closure. Meanwhile, between Jeanie and Stephen, always at his side, their feeling of love is strengthened more and more, which will have a thousand difficulties since the boy will have to leave to fight against the Southerners in the Civil War.
