Death Note is the anime series broadcast starting October 28 on MTV every Tuesday from 22,00 to 23,00 within the Anime Night program. The series is taken from Tsugumi Ohba's manga comic and drawn by Takeshi Obata, published by Shueisha as part of the Shonen Jump series, from 2003 to 2006 for a total of 13 volumes. In Italy it was published thanks to the Planet Manga editions of Panini Comics.
The cartoon was created by the Madhouse studios, under the direction of Toshiki Inoue and the graphic style of Masaru Kitao, for a total of 37 episodes, broadcast for the first time in Japan on October 4, 2006, on the Nippon Television network. . Of note is the soundtrack from the atmosphere of Hideki Taniuchi. Due to the topics covered, viewing is recommended for an adult audience.
The story begins with an overview of the world of the Shinigami, monstrous creatures similar to devils, who live in a dimension parallel to ours. On the musical background of a Gregorian chant, the shot focuses on Ryuk, an angel of darkness, who pays no attention to the pastimes of the other bored Shinigamis and drops a black notebook with the inscription Death Note or "notebook of death" on the ground. . This is collected by Light Yagami (Yagami Raito in the Japanese original), a model student, who sees him fall from the sky on the schoolyard. The young man is attracted by that notebook and even more by what is written inside it "The human whose name is written in this notebook will die". In order for this to take effect, it is necessary to have in mind the face of the person whose name is written, in this case you avoid hitting any homonyms. Arriving at his home, Light reads the indications of the Death Note very carefully and learning that it is also possible to decide within 6 'and 40 ", the type of death to be assigned to the victim: cardiac arrest or other causes. Light is obviously skeptical about the power of the notebook, but at the same time he is greatly attracted by the desire to verify its veracity. On the news he hears the news of a criminal, who has barricaded himself inside a school and holds children and teachers hostage, while the police try to negotiate the ransom. Light writes the name of the criminal on the Death Note and after a few minutes, the journalists announce the release of the children, due to the sudden death of their kidnapper. Light is shocked to have understood, that the death notebook works really, but he needs another proof to see if it was a fortuitous coincidence.
Light is a restless soul, crushed by the evil that surrounds him and wherever he turns he sees nothing but arrogance and abuse. As he goes inside a bookshop he sees a group of thugs, who surround a girl and after a series of "heavy" compliments they try to rape her. The poor thing manages to escape, but Light has already written the name of the gang leader on the Death Note and so, during the chase, the harasser is run over with his motorcycle, by a moving truck. Light thus has the definitive confirmation on the real power of the Death Note.
Meanwhile, in the world of the Shinigami, the demon Ryuk decides to go to earth to take back the Death Note and spreading his huge black wings, he goes to Light's house. He is terrified at the sight of the hideous demon, but after Ryuk explains the reason for his coming, Light realizes that he has enormous power in his hands. For his part, Ryuk is amazed by the impressive number of people killed by Light through the Death Note, in a delirium of omnipotent justice, but he can do nothing to recover the notebook, as once he has touched the ground, it belongs to the one who if you know it. However Ryuk worries Light, revealing to him that all humans who have used the Death Note have had a terrible death, without Hell and Heaven. Meanwhile, Light's mother brings him apples to his room, but he can't see the Shinigami, as he has an exclusive dialogue with Light. Ryuk is greedy for apples that devour himself almost all and learns that the boy wants to attract the attention of the world to himself, so that he can understand that he has the power of divine justice, capable of changing the world. First he wrote the names of the most dangerous criminals, later it will be up to the immoral, who annoy the next. This is because he intends to create a paradise on earth, populated only by serious and kind-hearted people. Ryuk rightly points out that by doing so the only evil left on earth will be only him. But Light is now in the throes of a delirium of madness, which sees him master of a new world.
Light continues to go about everyday life, as if nothing had happened, however both at home and at school he is followed by Ryuk, whom only he can see and hear. Ryuk's intent is to have fun and escape the boredom that gripped him in the world of Shinigami and Light is not the best of fun since in addition to studying, he takes care of writing the names in his Death Note. Light has a younger sister named Sayu who asks him to help her with her math homework, but Ryuk warns the boy that if Sayu touches the Death Note he will be able to see it. Meanwhile, Interpool discusses the mystery of the deaths from heart attack, which occurred in a few days to several criminals. Failing to determine whether these are intentional murders or natural deaths, the men of the organization rely on "ELLE" to solve the case: the best detective in the world. He hides his true identity and speaks to the assembly via a laptop, with his voice altered by software. Meanwhile, Light hides the Death Note on a double bottom of the drawer, in the event that someone can uncover the bottom and put his hand to the notebook of death, a device will be activated that will make it burn and destroy it forever.
In the city there is nothing but talk of the mysterious murderer, who executes criminals and on the web there are many websites and blogs dedicated to Kira; this is the nickname they gave him, deriving from the abbreviation of the word "killer". But on television, Light witnesses the announcement of the ELLE detective Lind Taylor, who finally comes out and swears to the whole population that he will capture the elusive killer Kira. Light feels offended when ELLE calls him evil, as he himself believes he is the enemy of evil. So he tries to take revenge on ELLE by writing the name Lind Taylor on the Death Note. After a few minutes he dies on live TV, to the amazement of everyone and the joy of Light. But after a few moments the symbol of ELLE appears on the TV screen, with her classic voice, cold and synthetic, which compliments Kira for her ability to kill from a distance. Lind Taylor was a person sentenced to death, which he used to test his opponent's abilities. So ELLE provokes him in front of the whole population, inviting him to kill him and showing all his stubbornness and cunning, managing to understand that Kira is in Japan. Light accepts the challenge, but the two opponents have one thing in common: they both consider themselves executioners.
