Where did all the amazing fantasy of Jules Verne, considered one of the most influential science fiction authors of all time? Simple: the writer really lived, when he was a young law student at the Sorbonne, the adventures narrated later in his lucky novels.

This is the idea at the heart of theThe extraordinary adventures of Jules Verne , cartoon in 26 episodes produced by Rai Fiction with the collaboration of Lux Vide and Musicartoon, directed by Enrico Paoloantonio.

Aired on Rai Gulp and Rai 2, the story centers on a 16-year-old Jules Verne, a bored law student in nineteenth-century Paris. Too much desire to travel, explore and venture into mysterious and unknown places to stay focused on law books, as his father would like. One day, almost by chance, he manages to foil a robbery in the travel magazine Contes De Voyages and for this he is invited by the editorial staff to take off on an expedition to Africa to measure the 24th meridian. Thus began, almost by chance, the `` extraordinary '' adventures of the young Jules who, in adulthood, will tell this episode in the story Adventures of three Russians and three Englishmen in southern Africa . Jules begins to skip college classes with enormous frequency to participate in expeditions of the magazine directed by Artemius Lucas. The group of adventurous journalists is composed not only of Jules and Artemius, but also of Amelie Lucas, daughter of the editor, Monsieur De L Ennu , the accountant of the newspaper, Esther, the housekeeper Lucas, and the mascots Hatteras, the Amelie's greedy bulldog, and Sophia, a little lemur met in the very first episode of the series.

Thus the future writer will find himself following a speleologist who is convinced that an underground civilization exists (Viaggio al centro della Terra), captive in the Nautilus submarine (Twenty thousand leagues under the seas), sets out in search of a meteor composed entirely of gold (Meteor hunt), on a trip to India aboard a road locomotive disguised as an elephantThe steam house), to participate in a crazy bet (Around the World in 80 days) and even to set foot on the Moon (From the Earth to the Moon). Each episode ends with the young Jules writing down what happened in notebooks. Notes that, in the future, will become well-known books. And as he travels far and wide and faces the most fearsome of dangers, Jules falls in love with Amelie, discovering that the feelings are fascinating and adventurous in turn.

In many episodes the young Verne and the redeeming of Contes De Voyages meet, and clash, with the notorious captain Nemo, certainly the best known character from the writer's pen. The main antagonist of the cartoon is an unscrupulous scientist who aims to conquer the world with deadly machines of destruction. Yet even Nemo himself hides more than one secret in his soul and tries to fill a sentimental void with his thirst for conquest.

As a good rule of thumb for Made in Italy cartoons, the characters are all well characterized and often make real intellectual and emotional evolutions over the course of history.

Characters

Jules Verne Shy, but ingenious, he loves writing and traveling. During the episodes he will be able to overcome his introverted character and gain confidence in his own means. a little genius of mechanics and for this reason Nemo wants to convince him to take his side in conquering the world. Love, reciprocated, for Amelie will slow him down, but only in the end will the two manage to overcome their shyness.
Amelie Lucas athletic and courageous, sometimes a real tomboy. He does not admit to reciprocating Jules' feelings, but slowly, slowly he will succeed. She is fond of her father and follows him because she fears for his safety.
Artemius Lucas the editor of the travel magazine treats Jules with a certain coldness, even if he secretly reads all of the boy's stories and encourages him into a career as a writer. A sad secret binds him to Nemo.
Monsieur De L Ennu Interested only in the money and the economic stability of the magazine, he does not prove to be the ideal companion of adventures, often putting his own life and that of his companions at risk in order to make money.
Esther Lovable ruler of the Lucas and a kind of second mother for Amelie to whom she advises, with little effect, to be more feminine.
Nemo Obsessed with progress, he is a character with a dark and sad past. He shows that he knows Artemius well and wants to convince Jules to take his side in conquering the world.

The extraordinary adventures of Jules Verne is a perfectly scripted cartoon in which the positivist culture of Europe of the second half of the nineteenth century hovers. Progress and scientific research are viewed with favor, as they are capable of improve the conditions of humanity, but also with concern, if used for personal purposes. The drawing is typical of the Italian school of animation which, by now, has earned the respect and esteem of Japanese and American authors. Wise the psychological evolution of the characters, as well as the themes that arise from the interaction between them: liberation from his father for Jules, female emancipation for Amelie, the financial greed of Monsieur De L Ennu and the affective one of Nemo. All seasoned with the genius of the writer Verne, author of immortal novels that, we hope, will also be able to affect the new generations, those of digital natives, now more accustomed to tablets than books.
