Smile little AnnaThe writer Budge Wilson imagines little Anna Shirley, born in the second half of the XNUMXth century, in a small town in Nova Scotia and precisely in Bolinghroke. Her parents Walter and Bertha are two high school teachers, who should guarantee her a comfortable and attentive life. Unfortunately, after contracting a bad disease, they die entrusting the newborn Anna, only three months old, to their housekeeper Joanna Thomas. The little girl will spend her sad childhood, living with the problems of the Thomas family, worn out by the economic precariousness of Bert, the unemployed and alcoholic head of the family and with his children who consider her as a stranger to their family, taunting her for her Red hair.

The only one who will treat Anna as a true sister will be Eliza, the first name of the Thomases, from whom she will receive affection and understanding. Despite the many difficulties Anna is a jovial and curious child, endowed with a fervent imagination that excites and amazes her about the little things that surround her, such as flowers, insects and birds. Her constant thought is directed towards her parents, in fact Anna wonders how her life would have been different if she had lived with them, since she never misses an opportunity to ask Joanna what they were like, what they did and what interests they had. Thanks to Eliza and her love for short stories, he learns to read and his most cherished object will be a book of poems, which was given to him.

Unfortunately, Eliza has to leave the Thomas family following her marriage to her beloved Roger. He comes from a wealthy family and being very much in love with her, he will be able to guarantee her a happy and attentive life. Despite everything Eliza would like to take Anna to live with them, but this is not possible, as Joanna does not consent. Anna is too important to the Thomas family as she sacrifices herself in housework and looking after younger children. Although in the Thomas house there are continuous economic problems and quarrels between Joanna and Bert, Anna will be an example with her optimism and her imagination. In particular, it will restore to Thomas his self-esteem and make him understand the importance of his contribution as a father.

Events precipitate with the tragic death of Bert, hit by a train so Anna Shirley is forced to move to the Hammond family in order to look after the wild children of the house, always ready to make some mess. In particular, Edward will give Anna a hard time, mocking her for the color of her hair and freckles. Anna will also have to take responsibility for little Harry, a one-year-old baby. After this experience, she will spend part of her troubled childhood in an orphanage, where thanks to her sweet personality, she will find the strength and the smile, to resist even the most difficult situations. The series ends with Anna's journey in the boat that will take her to Prince Edward Island and "Green Gables", where in Avonlea, she will meet the spouses Marilla and Matthew Cathbert and here the story of Red-haired Anna.
