The history of Pokémon begins in 1996 with the launch of the first video games for Game Boy. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, these games introduced the world to Pokémon, creatures that trainers capture and train to battle. The franchise quickly expanded to include an animated series, which follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum, a young Pokémon trainer, and his trusty Pikachu. Ash travels the world with the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master, meeting friends like Misty and Brock and challenging various gym leaders. The series introduced numerous supporting characters, rivals, and of course, a wide range of unique Pokémon.
In addition to the video games and animated series, the Pokémon franchise includes trading cards, films, toys, and other media, becoming one of the most successful mixed media series in the world. Pokémon's popularity continues to grow as new generations of creatures and stories are introduced, keeping the franchise fresh and interesting for new generations of fans
