The
cast of Crash Bandicoot is a masterclass in character
design, blending the manic energy of 90s cartoons with
a unique punk-rock aesthetic. When you look at Crash
himself, you see a character defined by his bright orange
fur and those signature blue jeans. To make your coloring
page stand out, I recommend using a vibrant shade of
orange for his body but perhaps adding a bit of light
brown or yellow around his stomach and muzzle to create
a sense of depth. His wild, expressive eyes are his
most famous feature, so keeping the whites crisp while
making his pupils pop with a deep black or brown really
captures that "wumpa-crazy" look we all love.
Coco
Bandicoot offers a different creative challenge with
her bright yellow hair and denim overalls. Since Coco
is the brains of the operation, her designs often include
tech gadgets or her trusty laptop. You can experiment
with metallic silver or light blue shades for the electronics
to contrast against her warm hair tones. Then there
is the formidable Dr. Neo Cortex. His yellow skin and
massive "N" on his forehead require a steady
hand. I find that using a darker mustard yellow for
the shadows of his face makes him look appropriately
villainous. Dont forget the vibrant green of his
laboratory chemicals or the deep purple of his cape,
which provides a fantastic visual contrast to the orange
of the heroes.
For
those who enjoy a bit of chaos, Aku Aku and Uka Uka
are perhaps the most fun to color because of their tribal
mask designs. These characters allow you to use every
color in your kit. Think of bright pinks, forest greens,
and sky blues for the feathers. Since they are wooden
masks, applying a base layer of brown and then lightly
layering colored pencils on top can simulate a weathered,
magical texture. If you want to get really creative,
try using a white gel pen or a bit of silver paint to
add a "glow" effect around the eyes of the
masks, mimicking the ancient mojo power they possess
in the games.
When
it's time to color the backgrounds, remember that the
Wumpa Islands are lush and tropical. Use various shades
of green for the jungle leaves and deep blues for the
ocean waves. If you are coloring a level featuring Dingodile
or Tiny Tiger, you might want to lean into warmer reds
and burnt oranges to capture the heat of the outback
or the intensity of a boss fight. The most important
thing is to have fun and let your imagination run as
wild as a runaway boulder.
