The Knight in Flight - First Image This first drawing captures our little Knight in a moment of pure grace, almost suspended in the air with that cape unfurling like wings behind him. It's one of the most iconic representations of the character, one that immediately makes us understand who we're dealing with: a silent, determined explorer, moving through the fallen kingdom of Hallownest with a lightness that contrasts with the heaviness of his mission. The white mask is the focal point, with those two curved horns reaching upward like small antennae or, if you will, a natural crown. The oval eyes, completely empty and black, are hypnotic in their simplicity. There's no expression, no mouth, yet this little creature conveys so much. It's precisely this emptiness that allows the colorist to project their own emotions onto the character. When coloring this first image, the most classic choice would be to keep the mask in white and gray tones. But here's the beauty: we're not forced to slavishly follow the original game. Personally, I'd suggest starting with a very light gray, almost white, for the base of the mask, and then delicately adding shadows with a darker gray in the areas where the light wouldn't reach directly. Consider the lower part of the mask, near the cape, or under the horns: there, you can allow yourself to darken slightly to create a three-dimensional effect. The cape is perhaps the most fun element to color in this drawing. Look at how it opens up, how it almost seems made of petals or stylized flames. In the game, it's black, but there's nothing stopping you from experimenting. A deep black with dark blue highlights can create a very elegant, almost regal effect. If you're feeling daring, you could try a dark purple that fades to black, adding a touch of magic and mystery. The key is to work with shading: the cape shouldn't be flat, but rather have lighter areas where the light hits it and darker areas in the folds. Also notice that hint of body under the cape, that small "comma" shape that would be the Knight's tail or robe. Light gray or off-white work great here too, but you could have fun creating a subtle gradient that goes from the color of the mask toward slightly darker hues as you move downwards. Don't underestimate the power of black eyes. Even if they look like just two ovals to be completely filled with black, you can play with them: leave a tiny white dot as a reflection of light, almost imperceptible, and you'll see how those empty eyes suddenly seem to come to life. It's a trick I often use when coloring characters with plain eyes, and it works wonderfully. |
