Bunzo
Bunny represents a very specific niche in character
design, blending the cheerful look of a 1980s birthday
toy with the "creepy-cute" vibe common in
modern horror games. When you look at these drawings,
you will notice his distinctive features like his oversized
ears, his golden-yellow fur, and those large, staring
eyes. Having analyzed many character designs in this
genre, I can tell you that the key to making Bunzo look
authentic is in the color choice. You want to aim for
a "vintage yellow" that feels slightly aged
rather than a bright, neon lemon. This gives him that
slightly weathered, abandoned toy look that makes the
games atmosphere so effective.
To
color his fur effectively, I suggest starting with a
solid mustard yellow base. If you are using colored
pencils, you can add depth by using a light brown or
burnt sienna in the recessed areas, such as behind his
ears and under his arms. This shading technique helps
to emphasize his plush, stuffed nature. His cymbals
are another great opportunity to practice your metallic
effects. Instead of just using a flat grey, try using
a mix of yellow and light brown to create a "brass"
effect, leaving a small sliver of white in the center
to represent a light reflection. This simple trick makes
the instruments look like they are actually made of
metal.
His
accessories, like the green party hat and the red dungarees,
provide a wonderful color contrast to his yellow body.
To make the red look truly vibrant, you can layer a
dark purple in the shadows of the fabric folds, which
adds a much more sophisticated look than just using
black. For the hat, a deep forest green works beautifully.
If you are feeling particularly creative, you can use
a fine-tip black marker to add small "wear and
tear" markstiny cracks or stitchesto
emphasize that Bunzo has been through quite a lot in
the depths of the factory.
Since
Ive spent quite a bit of time exploring both traditional
animation and the newer wave of indie horror art, Ive
found that Bunzo is a favorite because his geometry
is so satisfying to color. He consists of many round,
soft shapes that are excellent for practicing smooth
blending and gradients. Whether you are a fan of the
games deep lore or just love unique character
designs, these pages offer a great way to engage with
the Poppy Playtime universe. Just remember to keep your
lines clean and your colors slightly muted to capture
that perfect nostalgic horror feel.
