The story focuses on the Holy Grail War and explores the relationship between Shirou Emiya and Sakura Matou, two teenagers who participate in this conflict. The story immediately continues where the previous animated film left off Fate / stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower, following Shirou as he continues to participate in the Holy Grail War even after being eliminated as a master. Shirou has chosen to protect Sakura, while wizards and Heroic Spirits battle each other to obtain the Holy Grail, the sacred relic capable of fulfilling every wish. The fifth War of the Holy Grail, which began in the city of Fuyuki only 10 years after the previous one, proved to be perverse also due to the participation of Zouken Matou, the current head of the family of one of the three great houses of wizards who they began the ritual. Zouken summons True Assassin as his Servant while in the meantime a dark and mysterious shadow appears in the city, causing Master and Servant to fall one after the other. Shirou is also involved in the fight, being seriously injured and losing Saber; however, to protect Sakura, he firmly decides not to retreat from battle slowly from one to another. In the first episode, cell phones and e-mails are not yet within everyone's reach.
The film was first revealed in May 2018. Director Tomonori Sudo found it a difficult film to develop, but he expressed delight in the way fans reacted to the film. Sudo also stated that in the film he aimed for a broader development in the characterization of the characters of Shirou and Sakura due to some scenes. Another staff member said the film has an impactful ending and is looking forward to releasing the third and final Heaven's Feel film to follow the story's strong suspense.
