FROM ACTION FIGURES TO HEROES IN FLESH AND BONES
GI JOE: the name alone is enough to immediately evoke the heroism, patriotism and rigor that characterize this team of professionals fighting against the evil of the world. GI JOE has cheered the childhood of its many followers, starting from the year in which Hasbrò launched it on the market, back in 1964. "GI Joe is known to everyone, he immediately evokes precise images because he is very popular", he declares Lorenzo di Bonaventura, one of the producers of “GI JOE: The birth of the Cobra”.
“GI JOE introduced so-called 'action figures,'” explains Hasbro president and CEO Brian Goldner, one of the film's producers. “These plastic figures immediately caught on with the kids. For each of them he was the personification of a hero who could help him feel part of the action ”.
GI JOE's popularity continued during the Vietnam War and beyond, with new gadgets being launched on the market; however the big change of the Hasbro line took place in 1983. That year, in fact, GI JOE's plastic puppets, which up to that moment measured 30 centimeters, were reduced to 7 centimeters, immediately becoming collector's items. adults and children. GI JOE was also not a solitary hero, but the representative of a team of super-chosen soldiers, from all over the world, and assisted by a very sophisticated technology with which to carry out their operations.
In “GI JOE: The Birth of the Cobras” we find RIPCORD, an expert marksman and weapons specialist; SNAKE EYES, a ninja warrior armed with Katana swords and a Glock pistol, expert in martial arts, reconnaissance and infitration; SCARLETT, intelligent and reckless, martial arts teacher and equipped with a gas-powered crossbow; BREAKER, a specialist in deciphering secret electronic and technological codes; HEAVY DUTY, the team's weapons expert; GENERAL HAWK, the squad commander; COURTNEY “COVER GIRL” KREIGER, a former espionage model and assistant to GENERAL HAWK; and, of course, DUKE, a fighter with a lot of courage: he is the leader of GI JOE as well as a very good soldier.
“Each of them has a specific competence and the team counts on the particular qualities of each member”, explains di Bonaventura.
Parallel to the popular animated TV series released in 1985, a long series of comic books has also been published which has undoubtedly contributed to the renewal of GI JOE and the consolidation of its captivating mythology.
The mix of the new action figures with comic books and the TV series have definitely launched GI JOE beyond all possible expectations. “GI JOE sparked the imagination of the kids of the time,” explains Goldner. "GI JOE merchandise from the 80s has become much more popular than the original from the 60s."
As for the comics, Hasbro has chosen to join Marvel Comics. A young text editor named Larry Hama was tasked with creating a series of comic books for GI JOE from scratch. At that time, says Hama, there were only the drawings of the action figures, but there was no story. “During a meeting we took stock of what we had: drawings of the action figures; a guy with a shotgun saying "Infantry" and a girl with a bow saying "Intelligence". Nothing else".
The story would obviously be told from a single point of view. “We asked him, 'What are these heroes doing? Just march? There has to be some kind of conflict. ' So we drew from the comics by choosing the name COBRA for the villains. This was the beginning ”.
Hama accepted the assignment with some reluctance, figuring the series wouldn't last more than a few years. "Usually a book of this kind never lasts more than three years on the market". Collecting information material in military libraries and elsewhere, Hama eventually created a profile for each character, to be able to outline their individual characteristics and differences. This information was published on the packaging of the toys, thus providing descriptions of the various characters that are now part of GI JOE's traditional heritage.
The 155 publications, the Hama comics, says Goldner, “told the incredible story of GI JOE's team against the COBRA forces. And an entire generation has welcomed it as a real phenomenon ”.
