Madagascar 3: Wanted in Europe

Madagascar 3 - Wanted in Europe
Madagascar 3 - Wanted in Europe
DreamWorks Animation

And here is the third chapter of Madagascar, the animated film by Dreamworks Animation that continues the story of the adventures of Alex the lion, the giraffe Melman, Marty the zebra, the hippopotamus Gloria, the penguins, lemurs and monkeys. The story picks up exactly where the narration of the previous film with our protagonists in Africa stopped, but obviously this location does not satisfy them and so they will face a long and troubled journey to try to return to their New York zoo. .
The six-handed film, directed by Tom Mc Grath, Eric Darnell and Conrad Vernon, is based on the screenplay written by the directors themselves and was released in US theaters in June 2012 preceded by a hype that only increased the anticipation. by the public especially the younger ones. Already during the month of December 2011 a first trailer was released to which a second one was then added and for 22 August it is also expected to be broadcast in Italian cinemas, even if to tell the truth the debut of the film in our country dates back to 15 July when it was premiered at the Giffoni Film Festival by the comic duo Ale & Franz, voice actors of two of the protagonists (Alex the lion and Marty the zebra).
The American title "Madagascar 3: Europe's most wanted" has been translated by us as "Madagascar 3: sought after in Europe" which does not perfectly convey how intense the research is towards these cute animals that after some misadventures are found in the old continent and they will have their work cut out to escape those who want to catch them in every way.

THE PLOT
To pick up the thread, remember that the second episode of "Madagascar" ended with Melman, Gloria, Alex and Marty forced to stay in Kenya as guests of the Zuba reserve, while Skipeer and the doll leave for Monte Carlo by plane to enjoy their honeymoon.
The beginning of the third chapter in fact finds our always in the black continent, but I decided more than ever to return to the Big Apple and here they are leaving, this time swimming, but something is wrong and they find themselves in front of Monte Carlo. Penetrated into the attic of the casino with a good dose of bad luck, they manage to fall right on the roulette table, scaring everyone inside the gambling house. They find all their friends, but now they are hunted down as the alarm was given in a timely manner and a terrifying woman, Captain Dubois, absolutely wants to catch them. They manage to get out of the way thanks to the providential intervention of the penguins who break down the doors of the Casino with a sort of armored van, thus they all flee together, but where they pass they manage to terrify anyone thanks to a more than reckless drive. Our friends are definitely in trouble and Captain Dubois is chasing them all over town. Just when everything seems lost with a bit of luck they manage to take off with the wacky plane of the penguins, but when they are already celebrating thinking about their return to New York, the aircraft, alas, fails and they are forced to make a crash landing.

They find refuge on the train of a circus that is touring Europe and are greeted by the other animals. Thus began their adventures in the most important cities of the Old Continent.
Marty, Melman, Alex and Gloria now believe they are safe from the clutches of the terrible captain and arrive in Rome, but they do not know that the catcher has an almost supernatural gift that allows her to always follow their tracks and here she is in fact jumping on a train to go after them.
The show in Rome turns out to be a terrible fiasco and our circus performers are forced to get back on the train that will take them to another city. Also this time they managed to escape by a whisker from Dubois who had already arrived in the capital, but who had ended up being arrested by the Italian police due to her impetuousness.

Once again on the road, the animals realize that the show must be perfected, so they stop in the mountains and begin to try new and old exercises to give the circus back its former glory. If they want to go on tour in the States it is necessary to favorably strike the man who will have to organize their American trip. Once in London their show is a real success and in no time at all they finally land in New York. Thus the moment of farewell arrives, our protagonists are ready to return to their zoo with great regret of all the circus animals, but the terrible Dubois has never given up her prey, indeed, her only target is Alex because she is missing a lion's head among her trophies and now the captain has arrived in the Big Apple too.
When he is about to behead poor Alex, the guards of the zoo arrive and they believe
that it was the French pet dog that brought home Melman, Marty, Gloria and Alex. Our protagonists are safe, but the terrible Dubois does not give up and is ready to kill the lion in any way. Fortunately, the intervention of the circus animals also thwarts this attempt and the four protagonists can return to live happily in their zoo, perhaps ...

CHARACTERS
In the third chapter of Madagascar there are several new characters that are introduced.
In the role of the evil and cruel antagonist is Captain Dubois, as charming in his facial features as he is not very graceful in his pouted and pot-bellied physique. She makes her acquaintance in Monte Carlo and, after chasing our protagonists on the most famous streets of the city that partly retrace the path of the annual Formula One Grand Prix, she is seen behaving like a real bloodhound who is sniffing the traces of its prey. Definitely not very feminine in those situations, but she regains all her charm when she intones "Non je ne regrette rien" which miraculously manages to revive her bruised and wounded men after the fruitless hunt for the elusive Alex, Melman, Marty and Gloria.

Among the circus animals, the sea lion Stefano, the tiger Vitaly and the female jaguar Gia play an important role.
Stefano who always goes around with a tricolor collar to reaffirm his Italian character, is a sort of leader and it is he who tells Alex about the ancient splendor of the circus. His number consisted in being shot from the cannon and before the end of the film he will find the courage to bring it back.
Vitaly is a powerful and strong tiger who, behind a rather grumpy attitude, hides the terror of not being able to perform his very difficult number in which he passed in a very small fiery circle. He is also very good at throwing knives.
Gia is instead a fascinating jaguar with big sweet eyes who proves extremely skilled in the trapeze. Alex feels attracted to her and it seems that the interest is mutual.
Also worth mentioning is Sonia a huge and aggressive bear wearing a tutu and wandering around on a tiny bicycle. Julien, the king of lemurs, falls in love with her and, after wandering all over Rome on the tiny dueruote, the two take possession of a flaming Ducati.

As for the characters already known, as always the penguins are very funny with their ingenious and surreal ideas, but Julien the lemur is the most fascinating character. He always seems out of place for everything he says and does and even if in this third episode he has less space than in the two previous films, he remains irresistible with his crazy love for the gigantic bear with little good manners and a shady character.

OTHER NEWS ABOUT THE FILM
The film took advantage of what modern technology makes available and was shot in 3D like most films dedicated to children, however the graphic lines remain very simple and stylized and the spectacular effect of the new technique is to render still the lively sequences are more glowing and lively.
The European debut of "Madagascar 3: Wanted in Europe" took place in May at the Cannes Film Festival, where the feature was presented out of competition and where it was favorably received by audiences and critics.
The soundtrack is edited by Hans Zimmer and in it there are several well-known songs, they deserve a mention "We no speak americano" by Yolanda Be Coole sung by the circus animals and "Con te partirĂ²" by our Andrea Bocelli to underline the set sequences in the streets of Rome.

THE CRITICISM
This third chapter provides a minimum knowledge of the protagonists and of the previous events otherwise we find ourselves not fully understanding some of Alex's behaviors and not being able to appreciate some jokes. It is therefore a sequel dedicated to those who have already enjoyed the first two chapters (and there are really many not only in the States, but all over the world).

The plot does not turn out to be as funny as before, the entirety of the film could be considered sufficiently, but to its redemption the film still manages to capture the viewer and restore the good mood thanks to a small number of jokes.
According to most critics, the plot of the story is rather weak, but the single scenes that present moments of sympathy and fun will certainly be appreciated by the younger audience; the fact that the circus world has been introduced is however appreciable. Certainly the problems involving the animals that work in circuses in reality are only touched upon, but the film is a product destined to entertain and certainly not to reflect on their sometimes precarious conditions.
The inspiration from the circus world could prove to be very useful in the future, if and when, it is decided to shoot a new chapter of the saga and on the other hand it is the same ending of the film that suggests that the adventures of Alex, Melman, Marty and Gloria do not they will end here. In fact, the protagonists do not seem too excited to finally be back in their New York zoo and then there is that bond of affection born between Gia and Alex that is interrupted and that leaves a little bitterness in the mouth: it cannot end like this and at Dreamworks Animation they know it well.

Weak weave, but great attention to detail and excellent reconstruction of Monte Carlo, from the Hotel de Paris to the Casino and the legendary tunnel overlooking the sea could not be missed. The Roman setting with a lot of Colosseum and Forum is also accurate and if the circus tent stands right in the center of the Flavian Amphitheater you can also overlook the impossibility that the event can occur in reality.

In conclusion, a film promoted by critics albeit with some reservations, but which will undoubtedly be very welcome to those looking for just over an hour of leisure in a cinema.
Recommended for children and adults looking for a good mood.
