Playmobil: The Movie is a CGI animated film in the musical comedy genre, made by the French animation studios On Entertainment and based on Playmobil building toys. The film was directed by Disney veteran Lino DiSalvo, in his directorial debut, written by Blaise Hemingway, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. The film follows the adventures of Maria, a girl who tries to save her brother involved in a plan to capture the population by the Emperor Maximus, but all in a Playmobil world where the two are catapulted.
Playmobil: The Movie premiered as the inaugural opening film of the June 2019 International Animated Film Festival, the film began screening on August 7, 2019 in France, UK on August 9, 2019 by StudioCanal. Playmobil: The film was poorly received by critics, as it was perceived as a commercial feature film; most of the criticisms were about poor storytelling, generic songs and world-building issues, with several negative comparisons with
The Lego Movie.
The story tells of Marla, a once free and happy girl who after the death of her parents became responsible and overprotective towards her brother Charlie, who became lonely and sad. One night, Charlie sneaks out to visit a toy museum with a Playmobil construction exhibit. After Marla arrives and berates Charlie for escaping, a beacon illuminates them and transports them to the Playmobil world.
Marla and Charlie find themselves in the middle of a Viking battle and Charlie helps them until he is kidnapped by some pirates. Distraught trying to find her brother, Marla travels to the nearest town hoping to ask for help, and runs into Del, the driver of a food truck whose client refuses to pay him for the pink hay destined for the city's horses. . As Marla tries to form a group to find Charlie, Del agrees to help Marla find her brother in exchange for Maria's own Viking gold.
Marla and Del run into Rex Dasher, a secret agent and Del's old friend. Rex explains that a number of characters have disappeared, so the group sneaks into an infamous neighborhood to find information about the disappearances. Despite some problems, they successfully collect data and flee, but Rex is later captured by pirates. He is brought to Constantinople and finds Charlie, imprisoned with other characters by the emperor Maximus, who intends to make prisoners fight to the death. Rex tells Charlie that Marla was looking for him, which encourages Charlie to break away.
