YO-RHAD A FRIEND FROM SPACE

Yo-Rhad a friend from space is the new Italian animated film, released on April 14 in all cinemas. The science fiction cartoon was created by Camillo Teti and Victor Rambaldi (son of the well-known Carlo Rambaldi creator of ET) based on the story of the writer Gina Basso.
The story tells of the extraterrestrial population Klat-uh of the distant planet Tarkus, on which a huge catastrophe has struck. The aliens were forced to emigrate to the asteroid Glend which now wanders in space waiting to find a host planet, with characteristics similar to those of Tarkus. The asteroid, however, is heading on the same collision course as the earth and the earth's population, alerted by this serious danger, certainly is not preparing for a warm welcome towards the refugees, but is ready to bomb the meteorite with powerful nuclear missiles, al order to avert the threat. On Glend we find a young extraterrestrial named Yo-Rhad (very similar to ET), who stands out for his intelligence and joie de vivre and is eager to make friends with the earthlings, unaware of the danger that awaits him. Luckily on earth we find Jason, a boy who together with his grandfather Merope, an expert in technology and astronomy, will do everything possible to avoid the destruction of the Klat-uh civilization, trying to avert even the terrible impact. Jason, who in the meantime will have made friends with Yo-Rhad, will be helped in this impossible feat even by his classmates who, after a thousand adventures and vicissitudes, will be able to find a new planet capable of hosting alien refugees.

Presented at the Future Film Festival 2006, the film was made with a traditional animation style typical of Walt Disney, where although there is a basic construction in 3d, a graphic cartoon cut was preferred, aimed at children aged 5 to 12 years. The beautiful soundtrack was created by none other than Lucio Dalla, while the dubbing makes use of a respectable cast where we find Ornella Muti, Annalisa Minetti, Giada De Blanc, Elio Pandolfi and Antonella Mosetti.

Of course it would be unfair to compare this film to the animated Kolossals that are currently in circulation (The ice Age, Howl's Moving Castle, Wallace and Gromit, The Corpse Bride... just to name a few) however, we must take into account the tight production budgets our Italian cinema has to deal with. Despite the whole film, Yo-Rhad a friend from space, aims above all at the captivating and adventurous plot, which in addition to involving the young spectator will be the bearer of important messages such as friendship, the relationship between young and old, tolerance and above all a current and deeply felt theme for us Italians: hospitality and dialogue with different cultures.
