Belle and Sebastien the movie

Belle and Sebastien a scene from the filmFor fans of the timeless history of friendship, which had stood out in the TV schedule of the animated series of the Eighties, from January 30, 2014 comes to the cinema Belle and Sebastien, the film, revised from a narrative point of view and interpreted by real actors. Inspired by the homonymous collection of French short stories by C cile Aubry (from which, in 1965, a 13-episode black and white TV series had already been produced in France) and above all to cartoon series by Japan's MK Company (aired for the first time in 1981), the film is directed by the documentary maker Nicolas Vanier. Characterized by the great visual magnetism of photography by Eric Guichard, the feature film lasts 98 minutes and produced by Radar Films and Epith te Films and sees the child's debut on the screen F lix Bousset of 7 years.

At the top of a mountain, a shot is heard. A female deer is hit by an unknown bullet and her cub is left alone. A child is tied to a rope and lowered into the void to save the little animal. The baby is Sebastien and so his adventure begins.

Belle and Sebastien a scene from the filmThese are the years of Second World War and in the alpine village where Sebastien lives, a ferocious beast is slaughtering sheep. The men of the village, blinded with revenge and armed with rifles, begin the hunt for a large female Pyrenean Shepherd, Beautiful. Also C sar, Sebastien's adoptive grandfather, is convinced of the dog's guilt. But the child knows that Belle cannot be responsible for such acts. With the typical clarity of childhood, in fact, the little one approaches the big animal and, reading in its eyes, senses its innocence. Sebastien understands that Belle is good, but alone, just like him, and they both need each other. Belle, therefore, has no fault, other than that of having been mistreated by a violent master.

Thus begins one friendship story that overcomes any barrier, making us understand how feelings are universal. In a timeless mountain landscape, dominated by expanses of pristine meadows, Belle and Sebastien a scene from the filmBelle and Sebastien run, play, rest, observe the clouds in the sky and become intoxicated by the scent of flowers. Driven by a feeling of affection, which grows day by day, the two strengthen their bond and the child decides to find his mother, who has disappeared but is alive. Other characters are linked to the two protagonists, such as Angeline, the real niece of C sar o Andr , created from scratch for the film, curiously played by the son of C cile Aubry, the author of the original novels, who had already played the role of Sebastien in the French series of the sixties.

But, alongside love, brutality also populates the animal world and the human world in the same way. And here, the war and attacks on the village by German troops are the background to dog hunting and the wonderful story of friendship between Belle and Sebastien. The Nazi soldiers, in fact, with guns drawn, track down those who protect Jews and help them escape to Switzerland. The Dr. Guillaumme, a brave doctor on the front line, acts as a sentinel for the families who cross the border.

Belle and Sebastien a scene from the filmThe film, presented in the past edition of the Rome Film Festival, fascinates for its huge visual impact, in which the force of nature is exalted with great power. The director, Vanier, already author of The Great North, has the eye of a documentary maker, and it shows. The attention to the scenography and the attention to detail make the majesty of the Pyrenees explode on the screen and, at the same time, the restlessness of the mountain, in front of which man recognizes his limits. The landscape also becomes a character and, scene after scene, interacts with the actors, becoming part of the story. Furthermore, on a narrative level, some new themes are introduced, such as war clashes. And with these historicizing additions, aimed at representing the salient stages of contemporary history, the film risks surpassing the genre of children's films. In fact, strong moments, such as the friendship between Belle and Sebastien and the dog hunt in the first part, are contrasted with weaker moments, such as war representations and references to past events. This slight narrative imbalance that is created, however, does not diminish the final result. Thanks to the visual power and narrative efficacy of the scenes faithful to the children's story, viewers will be amazed.
