Production notes

Ben Stassen, producer and director says that The Magic Castle is based on an eye-catching film made about ten years ago. An attraction movie is a 4D movie that lasts about 10-15 minutes (basically a 3D movie with special effects in the theater). In that case it is a 12-minute film called HAUNTED HOUSE.

After THE ADVENTURES OF SAMMY, we were looking for ideas for a feature film and so we thought this would be a great idea to play in a movie. Obviously, being a short, we had to reproduce it in a true story. In fact, the first 10 minutes of our film recall some scenes and set-ups of the film made ten years ago.

At first, the English title was THE ENCHANTED HOUSE, but the word `` magic '' is more suitable for the film in question because the house belongs to a magician and because the protagonist uses magic. So we decided to call it THE MAGIC CASTLE. And it's definitely not a scary movie. Even the scene in which the potential buyer of the house runs away screaming `` the house is haunted! '' Is funny because the audience knows that it's all a staging orchestrated by the inhabitants of the house.

The animation of the characters

Co-director Jeremy Degruson recounts the technique used for character animation:
"There are 50 characters in THE MAGIC CASTLE and each of them has been drawn. Behind us, there is a great deal of research. We tried different drawings and a series of different approaches. For Tuono we needed a young cat, to half between a kitten and an adult cat, so in terms of proportions, we had to do several tests before we got the effect we wanted.

We created several scenes where we enjoyed abusing the boring characters. And as for Lawrence, we looked for actors who could somehow resemble him. Initially I thought of Pierre Richard, the prototype of a gray-haired and distraught old man. If it had been a movie, Lawrence's would have been a perfect role for Pierre Richard.

To create the film it took four steps:

First of all the stroyboard , that is the draft in drawing of the entire film. Many sequences were discarded, which helped us thin the film as much as possible and avoid too high costs. So we made a 2D animation that gave us the first impression of the film.

Then it is the time of the layout ', that is, of the film projection. By placing the camera points and characters in space, it was possible to really quantify the different sequences to be included in the film.

Once the layout is finished, the film begins to come to life.

During the animation phase, every single shot is animated and it is here that the characters become real. Emotions are perceived by the expression of their faces obtained thanks to the special effects. In this phase, moreover, the singular effects of the character are added, such as the movement of clothes or hair. Then comes the moment of photography.

The last phase consists of creating the environments and finishing the colors until the final images are obtained. We are very proud of the result! "

The music

As for the music, the directors think they were very lucky to have had the chance to work again with composer Ramin Djawadi, with whom they had already worked with during their first film FLY ME TO THE MOON. Since then they have worked on projects such as PRISON BREAK and GAME OF THRONES, or in films such as SAFE HOUSE with Denzel Washington, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA and PACIFIC RIM.

Ramin Djawadi has a great talent for creating music, which is always useful in animated films because you have to create everything in them - there are no actors who come and project their personalities, taking the situation in hand. You start with a white screen, there are no lights, sounds or music - you have to create everything. So having someone like him who knows how to make music according to the characters and their attitudes is important. While, in the case of commercial songs, the copyrights or orchestral compositions have been acquired, it is possible to choose the music before starting the animation or when the film is already finished. For example, the ballet scene, when the cat enters the house and is greeted by the magician who wants to celebrate and operates the gramophone. At that point, music is played that the characters dance for three minutes. For that scene, the music had to be composed and recorded, or purchased, before starting the film.

So when you start working on the soundtracks, you need a song while everything else is composed according to the scenes. For two months, in his studio, Ramin Djawadi had to see the film continuously. To complete every single scene, he first had to see them, then he made the music and then checked if it was correct. The music must be synchronized with the final images of the film.
