Sonic the Movie (Sonic the Hedgehog in the American original) is a 2020 live action animated adventure comedy film based on the character from the video game of the same name produced by Sega. The film was directed by Jeff Fowler (making his directorial debut) and scripted by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. The film features the likes of James Marsden, Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz for the original voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. In the film, Sonic teams up with Sheriff Tom as he tries to escape the clutches of Dr. Robotnik and the government.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog from another world who arrives on Earth to escape the evil forces that try to harness the power of his super-speed. After accidentally causing a major blackout trouble in the city of Green Hills, Montana, Sonic is targeted by the government who enlists tyrannical robotic Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) to hunt him down. Meanwhile, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), sheriff of the ex-SFPD turned Green Hills (James Marsden), meets Sonic and decides to help him out of capture, collect his rings and stop Robotnik from using Sonic's powers. to dominate the world ..

Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the rights to produce and distribute the Sonic-based film in 2013. On June 10, 2014, a live animated film was announced as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet.

Visual effects were made by Moving Picture Company (MPC), Marza Animation Planet, Blur Studio, Trixter and Digital Domain. The production team created a realistic version of Sonic using computer animation, adding fur, new running sneakers, two bigger eyes and a less humanized physique. They used Ted, the living teddy bear from the Ted movies, as a reference for placing a CG character in a real environment. Executive Producer Tim Miller said, "It would be weird and it would feel like running naked if it were some kind of otter. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It's part of what integrates it into the world. real and makes him a real creature. ”According to Miller, Sega wasn't“ entirely happy ”with Sonic's eye design. On May 2, 2019, in response to criticism of the design, Fowler announced on Twitter that Sonic would be redesigned. As a result, the November release date has been postponed to February 14, 2020. Artist Tyson Hesse, who worked on Sonic's previous media, was hired to lead the redesign. For the redesign, Sonic was given bigger and differently colored eyes, new running sneakers (based on the Dare Mesh women's sneakers made by Puma, which also look like the original Sonic sneakers from the games), white gloves and a body less human for reminiscent of character design in video games. The delay of the film and Sonic's redesign is estimated to have put the film at under $ 5 million compared to the original budget of $ 90 million for a total of $ 95 million.
