The dog and his general

Based on the screenplay by the Italian writer Tonino Guerra, Il cane e il suo Generale is a cartoon of French production, directed by Francis Nielsen, which was presented at the 2003 Venice Film Festival. The dog and its general was made with drawings deliberately naive, with the aim of creating a poetic and visionary atmosphere similar to the paintings of Chagall, a well-known Russian painter.

The story is set in Russia in 1836 and has as its protagonist the general, now elderly, who stopped Napoleon's advance with a desperate action: he launched birds with burning wings against the French army. The army fled and the city of St. Petersburg was saved, but the highest price was paid by the poor birds who died by the hundreds. For this reason the old general will never give peace, having on his conscience those innocent birds, who never miss an opportunity to spite him as a sign of contempt. One day the general, sad and lonely, met a stray dog on his way which he called by the name of his old enemy: Bonaparte. Thanks to this fabulous dog, the general will gradually regain the desire to look at the world with hope and poetry, but above all he will be able to solve his problem with birds. Bonaparte will gather all the dogs of the city, near a frozen river, in order to rebel against their masters, to obtain the release of all the birds locked in the cages. But the dogs are in great danger, in fact, spring is upon us and the layer of ice, now thinned, breaks, unable to support the weight of all those dogs, and it is here that the general intervenes, who with a heroic enterprise manages to rescue all dogs. With this gesture the general will regain the esteem of the birds and above all of the dogs of San Pitroburgo. In addition to poetry and dreams, this cartoon will give us the hope of not growing old on the sins and regrets of the past, but of being constructive and full of hope, in order to have the ability to improve the present.
