The iron giant

The splendid animated film "The Iron Giant" was directed by Brad Bird (the same de "The Incredibles") and based on the novel "The Iron Giant" by the English writer Ted Hughes. The story is set in America and precisely in Maine in 1957, at the time of the cold war between the USA and the Soviet Union, the rock 'n' roll revolution and television. The protagonist is little Hogarth, an intelligent and generous child of about 9 years, who one day, at the restaurant where his mother works as a waitress, listens to the fascinating story of a fisherman. It seems that off the coast, he spotted a gigantic metal robot fallen from the sky, with two enormous bright eyes so large that they confused them with the lighthouse of the coast. The news spreads and fear of a probable invasion by extraterrestrials or worse still of sophisticated Soviet weapons begins to spread in the city. Hogarth has always been attracted by the mystery of UFOs and a great reader of superhero comics, he goes there to look for that creature and eventually finds it, discovering with great amazement that that iron giant is a machine thought of with a good soul, which is feeds on iron. But this the inhabitants of Rockwell cannot know, let alone the arrogant federal agent Kent Mansley, who sets out on the trail of what he considers a terrible monster to be eliminated at any cost. Hogarth therefore, together with his friend Dean, hide the Iron Giant inside a junk yard. The film is a wonderful lesson in values such as tolerance, solidarity, peace and the defense of the rights of the excluded, which makes us reflect on the absurdity of the war that does not accept diversity. From a technical point of view, Warner Bros has obtained a beautiful combination of traditional animation and 3D computer graphics with which the gigantic metal robot has been created, which characterizes its movement and graphic rendering, such as to put an important cornerstone on the cinema of animation of the end of the millennium. Among the great animators who have put their hand to this masterpiece we remember Tony Fucile of Disney (Aladdin and the Lion King)
