The Hobbit: the desolation of Smaug

Bilbo BagginsThe highly anticipated sequel to The Hobbit is coming to the big screen. This second episode, directed by director Peter Jackson and produced by Warner Bros, promises not to disappoint fans. The release is scheduled in Italy for 12 December and, given the vast viral campaign that was organized for the event, it is to be sworn that there will be no lack of public feedback for these 161 minutes of viewing.

"I really think the worst is over," he says Bilbo in the last scenes of The hobbit, an unexpected journey, without imagining what would happen next. We had left them like this, the company of dwarves led by Thorin and Gandalf, just escaped, thanks to the help of the eagles, the attack of the wolves and orcs. On the horizon, the shadow of the Lonely Mountain under which stands Erebor, an ancient kingdom of the dwarves and the object of the liberation expedition.

ThorinThe company then continues east to try to reach the mountain, but contrary to what Bilbo thinks, the misfortunes are by no means over. Once in the territory of Beorn, they meet the man who has the power to transform himself into a bear with the features of a grizzly, therefore feared by the community. The man, however, does not show hostile towards strangers, on the contrary, as proof of how deceptive the appearance can be, he decides to help the company headed by Thorin Oakenshield to cross Mirkwood, Bosco Atro in the Italian version, giving them food, a place to rest and horses to cross the woods.

ThranduilHere the atmosphere becomes gloomy and at times spooky. Large trees intertwine roots and branches as if to embroider ominous omens, preventing us from seeing the sky through the gloomy foliage. The path is still very long and fraught with pitfalls. In these scenes there is an attempt to create suspense, but the fantasy tones, once again, prevail. While Gandalf has disappeared to follow other tracks, the dwarves and Bilbo grapple with the destructive life force of the woods. The place, in fact, besides being the home of the Wood Elves, led by Thranduil, father of Legolas, is also the haunt of frightening giant spiders. Monstrous arachnids capture dwarves. Interesting the close-up effect in which one of the giant spiders opens his mouth and seems to have to swallow the whole audience.

LegolasDeus ex machina, in this situation, is precisely the little hobbit who, thanks to a subterfuge and the help of the precious ring stolen from the Gollum, manages to free the traveling companions. But we don't have time to breathe a sigh of relief that the situation worsens again. The next encounter-clash is precisely with the Wood Elves. Thranduil, their ruler, wants to find out the reason for the journey inside his lands, but the dwarves, who have never had good relations with the elves, are reluctant to answer. They are thus made prisoners. In vain they try to escape and, as soon as they realize that the locks were forged by the dwarves themselves, they realize that escape is only a vain hope.

BullfightBut all is not lost. Bilbo in fact managed to escape capture, thanks to the ring that had made him invisible. At this juncture we make the acquaintance of a character created by the director's imagination and who is not present in Tolkien's story. This is the warrior elf Bullfight, a young woman with an impulsive character, cold-blooded when it comes to killing in battle and decidedly courageous, not surprisingly in fact she is the head of the Elf Guard. This character has a purely functional role, as the director has repeatedly reiterated, in the story it was necessary to insert a female role to give dynamism to the story, there will in fact be a particular sympathy between her and Legolas.

The escape of the dwarves from the elven prisons is one of the most brilliant scenes of the whole movie. Seeing the barrels being swept away by the current of the river with the dwarves trying to keep their balance, recalls certain rafting competitions, and it is not to be excluded that the director was inspired by these. Having escaped capture he elves, the company arrives with barrels in the fantastic town of Esgaroth. Here it seems to wander through the canals of a Venice revisited in a fairytale style. Released from the barrels, which before the dwarves contained food, the company is warmly welcomed by the inhabitants of Esgaroth, Pontelagolungo in the movie Italian version, who hope to kill Smaug.

GandalfRefreshed and rested, the dwarves and Bilbo continue to the Lonely Mountain to recapture Erebor. Once the secret door that leads to the dragon's lair is found, it is Bilbo to enter, as the beast cannot recognize its scent. If until now the little hobbit had not particularly shone for courage and fighting spirit, in this circumstance he will show all his shrewdness, deceiving, almost boldly, the greedy dragon. But beware, the gold coins are moving, a long snake tail protrudes from the precious ones and, if in the previous episode we could only see the yellow eye of Smaug, now we will see his giant head covered with scales peeking out in search of Bilbo hiding.

Anyone who has read Tolkien's book already knows how Smaug's life ends, but let us discover how this scene was rendered in the movie. The criticism that came after the American premiere bodes well. Not only is the film considered to be up to the previous one, but it seems that it can surpass it also as takings. After all, the action is not lacking and the cast was credible from the first frame. The director's choices are also excellent, in addition to the aforementioned scene of the barrels, also the panoramic shots of the mountains are particularly suggestive. Definitely not to be missed.
