Cartoon, Anime and Manga Video Games: Enter the World of Your Favorite Characters and Experience It Firsthand
There are stories that are born to be watched. Others to be lived. Cartoon, anime and manga video games are born from this very need: to transform the viewer into the protagonist, to allow him to walk in places he has only seen on the screen, to act like the characters he loves, to write — in some way — an alternative version of the story.
Miraculous - The stories of Ladybug and Cat Noir It is one of the most popular animated series for children in recent years, capable of conquering a global audience thanks to a well-balanced mix of action, romance, humor and superhero mythology. Created by Thomas Astruc and produced by the French studio Zagtoon in collaboration with Method Animation, Toei Animation and SAMG Animation, the series debuted in 2015 and has since become a cultural phenomenon, fueled by an active fandom, transversal merchandising and an ever-expanding narrative universe.
At the center of the story are two Parisian teenagers: Marinette Dupain Cheng e Adrian Agreste. She is a sunny student, a little clumsy but creative, with the dream of becoming a stylist. He is a charming model, son of a famous stylist, but with a complicated and lonely family life. Both, thanks to the power of the Miraculouses - magical objects linked to small spirits called Kwami - transform into superheroes: Marinette becomes Ladybug, Adrien becomes Black cat. Together they fight against the supervillains generated by the mysterious Hawk Moth (Papillon in French), who seeks to take over their powers for dark purposes.
The peculiarity of the series lies in the identity dynamic: Marinette does not know that Chat Noir is Adrien, and Adrien does not know that Ladybug is Marinette. This tangle of secrets fuels a constant romantic tension, enriched by misunderstandings, double meanings and sentimental developments that alternate with the fight against the "bad guys of the day". Each episode follows a consolidated structure: a character is "akumized" by Hawk Moth (that is, transformed into a villain due to negative emotions), and Ladybug and Chat Noir must stop him, often learning something about themselves in the process.
Visually, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir characterized by clean and dynamic 3D animation, set in a stylized but immediately recognizable Paris. The costumes of the protagonists red with black polka dots for Ladybug, total black for Chat Noir have become iconic, thanks also to a character design that mixes anime influences with European aesthetics. The action sequences are carefully choreographed, and each episode includes at least one transformation, a fight and the purification ritual of the akuma, the insects that spread evil.
Over the seasons, the series has introduced new characters and new Miraculouses, expanding the narrative universe. Classmates, friends, rivals, temporary allies: the mythology grows, with a network of secondary superheroes that reflects the diversity of the global audience. Ladybug also takes on a leadership role, coordinating other Miraculouses such as Rena Rouge, Carapace, Queen Bee, and many others. The narrative becomes increasingly horizontal, with narrative arcs that develop over the course of multiple episodes, and a mythology that is rooted in a broader and more mysterious past.
The international success of the series has been fueled by widespread distribution, broadcast in dozens of countries and dubbed in numerous languages. In Italy, it landed first on Disney Channel and then on Super! and Netflix, finding a transversal audience composed not only of children and pre-adolescents, but also of teenagers and young adults. The tone of the series, never infantilizing, has allowed this broadening of the target: if on the one hand it offers action and humor, on the other it delicately addresses themes such as insecurity, identity, responsibility and complex family dynamics.
Il merchandising of Miraculous is one of the richest ever built around a European animated series. Starting from the main characters, toys, dolls, action figures, cosplay accessories, playsets, clothing, school supplies, books, illustrated albums and themed magazines have been created. The product line has expanded in parallel with the diffusion of the series, with new collections launched every season, often combined with new transformations or new characters introduced in the story.
The editorial component has also been particularly strong: official novels, game books, comics and manga inspired by the series have been published in numerous countries. Some volumes delve into aspects of the plot not told in the series, enriching the fan experience. On the digital front, the Miraculous universe has also found fertile ground on social media, in fan-made content and on video platforms, where official clips and fan theories mix in a constant flow of content.
The Miraculous universe continues to expand. The film was released in 2023 Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir - The Movie, distributed on Netflix, which re-proposes the origins of the characters in a cinematic and musical key, with a new soundtrack and enhanced animations. Spin-offs, live action products and official video games are also in development, confirming the vitality of the franchise. The saga is designed to last, with a modular mythology that can speak to different generations while maintaining coherence and appeal.
Miraculous has been able to build a contemporary imaginary starting from classic archetypes: masked superheroes, double identities, romantic tension, the fight between good and evil. But it has done so with intelligence, style and a rare balance between entertainment and construction of meaning. Ladybug and Chat Noir are now well beyond the threshold of simple television popularity: they have become symbols of a new generation grown up between YouTube, streaming and global connections, but still fascinated by the power of a well-told story.
A different form of immersion
Unlike animated series, which follow a predefined plot, video games allow interaction and choice. Even when the story follows a linear script, the player still has an active role: he decides the pace, explores the environments, faces challenges, develops strategies. And all this with a character that is not only on the screen, but in his hands.
This form of participation creates a deeper connection. Because the character is no longer just someone to admire, but someone to play. Their victories become yours. Their decisions are up to you. And every level passed, every enemy defeated, every mission completed is a part of your version of the story.

A way to get to know the characters better
When you play a video game based on an animated series, you often discover new aspects of the characters. In some cases, you delve deeper into their story, meet lesser-known supporting characters, and explore aspects of their character that were left in the background in the animation. Other times, however, it is the gameplay itself that brings out how similar you feel to that character — or how much fun you have playing them, even if only for a few hours.
Some games give you the option to choose between multiple characters, each with different abilities and paths. Others even let you create your own avatar and interact with the world of the anime or manga from a whole new perspective.
In any case, the relationship with the character changes. It becomes more direct, more affectionate, more engaging.
Graphics, music and atmosphere: all recognizable, all familiar
One of the elements that make a video game based on a cartoon so engaging is the fidelity to the original universe. The settings are carefully reconstructed, the colors respect those of the series, the music takes up the most well-known themes or proposes new ones, but coherent. Every detail is designed to make the player feel "at home", inside a world that he already knows and loves.
