Lara Croft is a fictional character and protagonist of the Tomb Raider video game series and the derivative Lara Croft series, both produced by Square Enix, the company that bought Eidos Interactive's Tomb Raider series. Lara Croft is portrayed as a beautiful, intelligent and athletic archaeologist who ventures around the world in ancient tombs or ruins full of dangers. Created by Toby Gard while working for British developer Core Design, the first character appeared in the Tomb Raider game, in 1996. He also appeared in sequences of mini-printed video game adaptations - animation series, three feature films, played twice by Angelina Jolie and most recently by Alicia Vikander, as well as related products. Lara Croft is also used in third-party promotions, including TV and print advertisements, as well as a model spokesperson. The character promotion includes a brand of clothing and accessories, stickers and fashion model presentations.
It is the Core Design that is at the origin of the development of the character and the series. Inspired by pop artist Neneh Cherry and comic character Tank Girl, Gard conceives Lara Croft as a response to stereotypes of female characters. The company modifies the character for the following titles, making graphical improvements and additions to the gameplay, such as new maneuvers and new items. The very mixed reception for the work Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness of 2003 results in a change of developer: the license is given to American Crystal Dynamics. The new developer takes the character to zero with his "new" video game series. Crystal Dynamics is committed to making the character believable and modifies his physical proportions and his ability to interact with the game environment. Lara Croft is voiced in French in Françoise Cadol's main series until 2013 and then by Alice David from the reboot. However, Françoise Cadol continues to voice the character in the derivative series.
Critics see Lara Croft as an important video game character in popular culture. In 2006, she received a star on the Walk of Game and was also recognized as "the most successful human video game hero" by the Guinness Book of Records. The character's beginnings are very well received in the game world, but its popularity gradually declines until the series is restarted in 2006. Lara Croft is also considered a sex symbol, one of the first in this branch. The character's influence in the world of video games is debated by critics.
