Asterix or The Adventures of Asterix is a French comic series. The series first appeared in the Franco-Belgian comic magazine Pilote on October 29, 1959. It was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo until Goscinny's death in 1977. Uderzo then took over the script until 2009.
The series follows the adventures of a village of Gauls that resisted the Roman occupation in 50 BC. They do this by means of a magical potion, brewed by their druid Panoramix, which temporarily gives the recipient superhuman strength. The protagonists, the title character Asterix and his friend Obelix, have various adventures. The ending "ix" of both names (as well as all other pseudo-Gallic "ix" names in the series) alludes to the suffix "rix" (meaning "king") present in the names of many true Gallic tribal chiefs such as Vercingetorix, Orgetorix and Dumnorix. In many of the stories, they travel to foreign countries, although others are set in their village. For much of the series' history (Volumes 4 to 29), the settings in Gaul and abroad alternated, with even volumes distributed abroad and odd volumes set in Gaul, mostly in the village.

Dogmatix is the only main character in the series that is not human. His role is minor in most of the stories, significant mainly as a 'bone' of contention between Asterix and Obelix as to whether he should be allowed to accompany them on their adventures. Dogmatix is Obelix's pet dog. Unlike his immense master, Dogmatix is very tiny, but he can have a nasty temper. Dogmatix loves nature and hates to see trees suffer. (Obelix once mentions that this is because Dogmatix likes to urinate on them.) Dogmatix met Asterix and Obelix in Lutetia (in Asterix and the Banquet) and followed them all the way around Gaul until Obelix finally noticed him when they reached the village and Dogmatix barked behind him. Since then, Obelix has become very affectionate toward Dogmatix. In Asterix and the Chieftain's Shield, Obelix gets angry with hungry people who try to take Dogmatix's bone and insists they will be punished if they try to take advantage of his dog. 5,99
