The 'No. 7 Cherry Lane' premieres Criterion Channel's exclusive on July 1st

The Criterion Channel announces that it will present the exclusive streaming premiere of the acclaimed Chinese animated film No. 7 Cherry Lane, available from July 1st. Winner of the award for best screenplay at the 2019 Venice Biennale, the artfully crafted 2D work was also nominated for best film at the Italian event, as well as at the Stuttgart Trickfilm, the Goteborg Film Festival, the Cinephile Society and the Satellite Awards.

Renowned director Yonfan's first animated film is an exquisite and sumptuously stylized ode to youthful love, cinema and the world of 60s Hong Kong that has deserved comparisons with Wong Kar Wai's lush and languid romance. Set amidst the turbulent social unrest of the 1967 Hong Kong anti-colonial riots, No.7 Cherry Lane unfolds as an almost hypnotic daydream of bittersweet nostalgia and intoxicating eroticism in which a taboo love triangle unfolds between a college student reading Proust, a self-exiled Taiwanese divorcee and her incredibly beautiful daughter.

Beautifully crafted through a mix of colored pencil and charcoal drawings on rice paper and studded with references to international literature and art cinema - especially French screen siren Simone Signoret films - this singular achievement in adult animation casts a heady spell of her own.

Since 1984, the Criterion Collection has been dedicated to publishing major classic and contemporary films from around the world in editions offering the highest technical quality and original and award-winning supplements. Regardless of medium - from laserdisc to DVD and Blu-ray to streaming on the Criterion Channel - Criterion has maintained its pioneering commitment to presenting each film as its producer would like it to be seen, in cutting-edge restorations with special features designed to encourage repeated viewing and deepening the viewer's appreciation for the art of the film.
