Disenchantment - Matt Groening's 2018 adult animated series
Disenchantment is an American animated series for adults, created by Matt Groening, (the author of The Simpsons and Futurama). The series will stream on Netflix starting August 17, 2018.
Set in the medieval fantasy realm of Dreamland, the series tells the story of Bean, a rebellious and alcoholic princess, her naive Elf companion and her destructive "personal demon" Luci. Disenchantment features the original voices of Abbi Jacobson, Eric André, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Matt Berry, David Herman, Maurice LaMarche, Lucy Montgomery and Billy West.
The first ten episodes aired on August 17, 2018, and the next ten on September 20, 2019. In October 2018, Netflix renewed the series for another 20 episodes. The first ten of these were released on January 15, 2021.
Characters
Princess Tiabienie that Bean
Princess Tiabienie that Bean (voiced in the original by Abbi Jacobson) is Dreamland's drunken teenage princess. Bean, as the main character of the entire series, is the daughter of King Zøg and Queen Dagmar, but after Dagmar accidentally poisoned herself, Zøg married Queen Oona, who became Bean's stepmother. In the ninth episode, "To your own elf be sincere“, Bean must choose to revive Dagmar or Elf, both previously dead, with the Pendant of Eternity. Bean chooses Dagmar, who angers Elf when he arrives in Hell and sees his decision. Dagmar orchestrates the fall of Dreamland and takes Bean on a boat to Maru, where Dagmar came from, to meet the whole family.
Bean often sneaks into the local bar, The Flying Scepter (later renamed Hell of Lights after Luci won the bar in a Popeye contest), to get away from her royal duties, and returns to the castle drunk. Bean's full name is actually Tiabeanie Mariabeanie la Rochambeau Grunkowitz, but she calls herself “Drunkowitz” whenever she's drunk, producer Josh Weinstein announced on Twitter following the release of the first season.
At the end of the first season, Tiabeanie falls into the Catacombs, the tunnels that run under Dreamland's castle, and meets Dagmar, who asks for a hug. At the start of the second season, Bean is angry with Dagmar for trying to get close to her. It is proposed to her by Alva Gunderson in the third part, as Alva wants to access her magic. Bean is crowned queen after Zøg is deemed too crazy and unfit to rule the kingdom.
The second season of the series reveals that Bean is bisexual.
Elf
Elfo (voiced by Nat Faxon) is the companion of Princess Bean, a socially clumsy and shy elf and a friend of Luci. At the beginning of the first season, Elf leaves his homeland of Elfwood in search of a better and sadder life, but in the middle of the season, Elfo is killed by an unknown knight after returning to Elfwood to ask the elves for help. In the second part, Bean and Luci are able to communicate with Elf and tell him to go down to Hell so they can find him and bring him back to life. Their attempts are successful and Elf's soul is returned to his body.
Later in the season, Elf meets the legendary Leavo elf and nearly kills him due to his magical blood, able to bring the inhabitants of the Dreamland kingdom back to life after Queen Dagmar had turned them all to stone, but Elf decides that it is not right to kill Leavo and instead Leavo helps him to convince the elves in Elfwood to donate their blood. In the first season episode “The Electric Princess”, Elfo becomes Luci's roommate. At the end of the first season, Elfo is sentenced to death after being Bean's lawyer during his trial, but falls to the ground in the Catacombs just before being burned at the stake and meets former Queen Dagmar.
Lights
Lucille (voiced by Eric André), also known as Luci, is Bean's "personal demon", as he defines himself. He was sent from the mysterious kingdom of Maru, as revealed in the second part, and develops a close friendship with both Elf and Bean, even going so far as to sacrifice his immortality to betray his fellow demons and save Elfo, who died in the first. part. Luci is often seen smoking and making witty comments and insults as well as eating whole dead birds.
Luci was sent by Maru by Emperor Cloyd and his sister Rebecca to spy on Bean and bribe her to be willing to go with Dagmar and become the new queen of Maru, but Luci gets close to Bean and Elf, developing a really deep friendship with them, and even leaves Maru for them.
At the end of the third part, Luci is beheaded by a secret elevator in Dreamland and ends up in Heaven, where he is greeted by God and Jerry.
King Zøg
Zøg (voiced by John DiMaggio) is the overweight and annoying king of Dreamland and father of Bean and Derek. He first married Queen Dagmar, a "daughter of a noble from a distant kingdom" and had Bean, until Dagmar died and Zøg remarried Oona, a reptile from Dankmire, and had Derek, Bean's half-brother.
At the end of the first part, after Zøg is betrayed by Dagmar, the whole kingdom of Dreamland is turned to stone. When Bean returns to the kingdom, Zøg thinks she was working with Dagmar, but Bean saves him and convinces him that she too has been taken aback. In the second part, Zøg also befriends Prince Merkimer. After divorcing Oona, Zøg dates a half-bear, half-female selkie, is robbed by a troupe of circus elves who turn out to be trolls, and even tries to get Gout to impress a king from a distant kingdom. After being buried alive in Season XNUMX, Zøg goes mentally insane and, after a series of temporary fixes, Chazzzzz takes him to Twinkletown Insane Asylum at the end of the part.
Queen Oona
Oona (voiced by Tress MacNeille), is Zøg's second wife and the queen of Dreamland during the first season. Oona is Darkmirian, a race of humanoid reptiles, and doesn't know much about humans. In episode six, "Swamp and Circumstance", Bean, Elfo, Luci and the rest of the Dreamland team visit Oona's hometown of Dankmire, where Oona was the class clown at school, and, in an effort to be nice, they end up being disrespectful and are chased out of the city gates by the leaders of the country. Zøg also believes that Oona is the cause of Dreamland's fall at the end of the first part in Dagmar's place.
In the second season, Oona has a smaller part and, after being thrown into the ocean by Dagmar who wants her dead, she tries to warn Bean of Dagmar's betrayal. Bean doesn't hear her, and Oona is instead picked up by a gang of pirates led by the famous elf Leavo, who left Elfwood before Elf and never returned. Oona convinces the pirates on the ship to be brave and actually raid other ships, and upon her return to Dreamland, she promptly divorces Zøg and sets off to captain the pirates in Leavo's absence when she decides to live in Elf Alley with the other elves. Oona returns in Season XNUMX for Derek's wedding, which is ultimately canceled, and later helps Bean uncover the terrible secret about Odval's company.
Bonnie Prince Derek
Derek (voiced by MacNeille) is Zøg's second child and Oona's first child. He's a mix of Dankmirian and Dreamlander, and he often admires his older half-sister Bean, who pushes him back, finding him annoying. Derek has a recurring nightmare about a growing pan due to the fact that in episode six, "Swamp and Circumstances" was almost cooked to be fed to the swamp monster. At the end of the first season, fearing Oona's wrath, Zøg locks Derek in the highest tower of the castle to keep him safe, but then forgets about him until a few episodes later in the season, in "The Very Thing", after that Oona and Zøg get divorced, then they realize that Derek has been locked up in the tower all this time. They save him and tell them about their divorce, and he takes it pretty well.
Later, towards the end of the season, Derek feels particularly impressed by Bean, and when he asks if he can accompany her to the pub, she says no. Derek runs to the beach and finds a little octopus he calls Slimy, and when he shows it to Elfo, with whom he befriends, Slimy has become a giant monster. Slimy takes Derek captive, but Bean is able to save him, revealing that she cares about him. However, Bean's confession doesn't make it any harder to sentence Bean to death after shooting Zøg and making Derek de facto king in his stead, even though the shooting was an accident.
Pendergast
Pendergast (voiced by André) is the chief knight of Dreamland. Pendergast appears in both seasons of the show and is one of the first Dreamlanders Dagmar turns to at the end of the first part, but is mistaken by Luci for a statue. Before and after being revived, Pendergast is portrayed as a weak knight trying to be manly. In the third part, Pendergast is tasked with guarding King Zøg from Odval and the Archdruid to make sure his bullet wound doesn't heal, and to kill him if he does, but Pendergast reveals that he looks to Zøg as a father. and betrays his employers to help Zøg escape from the castle in a coffin. However, he is killed by the Archdruidess and beheaded, further worsening Zøg's condition as he slowly goes mad.
History

”A princess, an elf and a demon walk into a bar
Princess Tiabeanie "Bean" is the rough princess of Dreamland, sadly destined to marry Prince Guysbert, son of the incestuous king and queen of Bentwood. Looking through his wedding gifts, Bean finds a demon named Luci who was sent by two dark wizards in hopes of turning Bean into evil. Luci ends up being a fun-loving troublemaker who sympathizes with Bean's plight, as she feels the marriage is simply a grab for more power from her father, King Zøg. Meanwhile, Elfo, an optimistic elf, disillusioned with his happy candy life, leaves the elf kingdom much to the dismay of his people. Elf arrives in time to witness Bean reject Guysbert who unfortunately stabs himself with a sword. Bean, Elf and Luci escape as Prince Merkimer, who is next in line to marry Bean, and his men chase her.
For whom the Pig Oinks
Bean, Elf and Luci are "saved" by Merkimer who brings them back to Dreamland. Elf is greeted by Sorcerio who wants to use his blood to create more magic and so Zøg can obtain the elixir of life. At Luci's suggestion, Bean approaches Merkimer with the idea of organizing a bachelor party before the wedding. He also discovers Zøg and Sorcerio's plan to drain Elfo of his blood so that they use pig's blood to trick them. At the bachelor party, the entire crew travels to the island of mermaids in the hope that Merkimer will be killed by the mermaids. Instead he is captured by the walruses who save them from the murderous Borc, although they turn out to be the Bozak allies. Bean eventually loses hope; however, a thirsty Merkimer discovers "elf blood" which is mainly pig's blood and Elf convinces him to drink it by turning him into a pig. Bean, fed up, denounces the marriage and Zøg finally agrees with his daughter. This upsets the king of Bentwood and he and Zøg work things out in a fist fight with Bean, Elf and Luci looking happy.
The princess of darkness
While under the influence of Queen Oona's snake root, Bean, Elf and Luci come across a band of gender-aware thieves who convince Bean to join them. At Luci's request, Bean breaks into his ancestors' resting place and steals their valuables, but the thieves betray them and are captured. At the suggestion of Odval, the vizier of Zøg, they decide to hire an exorcist named Big Jo to remove a demon from Bean, unaware that Luci, who everyone thinks is a cat, is Bean's personal demon. Big Jo manages to seal Luci and leaves. While Bean feels clean and at peace with herself, Elf convinces her that they need to get Luci back and know that he, along with many other demons, will be thrown into a volcano. Bean and Elf return to the thieves taking their valuables and manage to reach Big Jo which they end up dismembering and throwing into the volcano. When they successfully free Luci, Elf accidentally rolls Big Jo's carriage down the crashing mountain and frees all the other demons in the world.
Massacre of the party at the castle
Due to her status as a princess and her reputation, Bean is frustrated that she can't have a real relationship with anyone. Zøg ends up drinking poisoned fountain water and is taken by Oona to her people's spa, where an employee named Chazzzzz begins torturing Zøg with her stories. Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the castle throw a party. While Bean tries to use him to meet someone, Elfo wants to use the opportunity to tell her about his true feelings. The party is suddenly overrun by the Vikings where their leader, Sven, ends up catching Bean's interest, angering Elfo. After the party, Zøg sends Bean to a convent to become a nun. She is immediately expelled and Zøg insults her for being "good for nothing". She meets up with her maid Bunty, her husband Stan and their numerous children. To earn a living, Bean decides to take a job as an apprentice for Stan, who is an executioner and torturer. Elfo stays with Bunty who rocks him so much that he escapes into the woods. Bean meets a giggling witch named Gwen who he sympathizes with. When the time comes to execute her, Bean fails to do so and leaves the kingdom. When they arrive, the group suffers the customs of the Dankmiri who for years have been at war with the Dreamlanders over a canal that has been built (which the Dankmiris have been forced to pay for). Oona manages to return safe and sound, but Zøg and Derek are captured by the highlanders and Bean, Elfo and Luci save them. Zøg finally admits he is proud of Bean and allows her to go to Hay Man, an event he initially prevented her from attending.

One evening, when the group eats at a restaurant in Elf Alley, a small village built in one of the alleys of Dreamland until a mysterious dragon attacks the village and burns the buildings. Bean and the knights later track down the dragon and Bean takes it down, but when he goes down to look it is revealed that it is an airship and the pilot named Skybert, exits the ship and passes out and the knights later capture him. Later in Dreamland, the council interrogates the pilot who they think is a sorcerer and since Dreamland is in the Middle Ages, which means they confuse magic and science, but Bean spies on them because he is curious with the science that she pronounces it as "sticence" . ". Later, the council decides to throw the pilot into the prison awaiting execution but Bean, her curiosity getting the better of her decides to free him. After successfully escaping, she asks him to take her to her homeland, Steamland reluctantly agrees but warns Bean to stay in the garage when they get there. After their arrival in Steamland, Bean stays at Skybert's house but gets bored quickly and runs off to explore the city. He later becomes passionate about advanced technology and even meets a female bartender and this surprises her because the only gender allowed to become a bartender is the male in Dreamland's law. He later explores a new avenue but discovers that Skybert is not what he appears to be and in fact he is trying to deliver a weapon, which is specifically a small pistol and is talking to his employees who discovers Bean and tells her to get out of the airship he is in. she went into hiding, but Bean ran away from them after a few minutes. He later encounters Sky's airship and uses it to escape, but while filing it Skybert manages to get on the ship and fight Bean but loses and falls off the ship. After arriving in Dreamland, she tries to warn her father that there is a killer lurking in the castle, but Odval orders Pendergast to take the weapon but Bean clings but as a result accidentally shoots his father in the stomach while his body collapses and Bean approaches and cries over his still body. Soon after, Odval decides to ma Bean under house arrest since he "assassinated" the king, but all of this has been quietly revealed to everyone as part of a plan to usurp the throne from Odval becoming regent while Derek is the real king who enforces the law. Later, Bean tries to escape but fails and ends up in the dungeon.
