2021 Sundance Fest Slates 10 short films in the animation program

The non-profit organization Sundance Institute today announced the presentation of new independent works selected in the categories Feature Films, Short Films, Indie Series and New Frontier for the Sundance Film Festival 2021. The Festival will take place digitally via a feature-rich online platform, built by Sundance and in person on satellite screens across the country (public health permitting) from January 28 to February 3, 2021. In addition, Festival attendees can gather in halls of virtual wait, participate in live questions and answers, and come together in new inspired online environments to interact in a range of new and familiar ways.

The Institute shared the details of how the Festival will meet the public on the online platform and on satellite screens earlier this month.

“This Festival is a singular response to a singular year - in both design and curation - and we are thrilled with the new dimensions of possibility it will reveal. But deep down there is something that speaks to our most enduring values, ”said Tabitha Jackson, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “For thousands of years human beings have come together to tell stories and make meaning. In this pandemic year, we come together to celebrate a constellation of artists with unique perspectives who express this present moment and who together say: “We exist. This is who we are. And this is what we see. '"

Fifty short films from 27 countries were selected out of 9.933 nominations, including 10 films in the animation track. Overall, 48% (24) of the shorts announced today chose to indicate that they were directed by one or more women; 2% (1) was headed by one or more non-binary individuals; 64% (32) were directed by one or more black artists; 20% (10) from one or more people who identify as LGBTQ +.

“In a year unlike any other, short films are still going strong with form-unique art and craftsmanship. We are thrilled to share an education with a wide range of characters, styles, ideas and emotions to our audiences, wherever you are, ”said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short.

Festival goers can also discover the next wave of animated storytelling in the New frontier section for emerging media works, included Luck!, a series of documentary shorts that explore society's relationship with money; the just announced People, from Baobab Studios and Erick Oh; and "virtual erotic poetry" Nightsss by Polish artists Weronika Lewandowska and Sandra Frydrysiak.
