La Gallina Turuleca is a candidate for the Goya Awards to be held in Spain

On Monday 17 January they were announced the nominations for the 35th edition of the Goya Awards, from the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España , in honor of the best Spanish cinema. Unusually this year, only one animated film is competing in the category: The Turuleca Hen (Turu, the extravagant hen) - who has consistently had three or four contenders over the past two decades, with the exception of one competition for two titles in 2005.

This year, the Academy changed the eligibility requirements to accommodate films that could not be released in theaters due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Directed by Victor Monigote and Eduardo Gondell, The Turuleca Hen (Turu, the Wacky Hen) is a Spanish-Argentine CG family film, inspired by the popular character. Although Turu is a laughing stock among his poultry companions because he cannot lay eggs, he has a unique ability to understand humans and a beautiful singing voice. When his beloved human friend suffers an accident and is taken to the Big City hospital, Turu embarks on a grand adventure to find her: become a star, fall in love, and face an evil villain along the way.

In the Best Animated Short Film category, four titles made it to the final competition: Blue & Malone: Casos Imposibles by Abraham López Guerrero, Homeless home (Home of the homeless) by Alberto Vázquez (winner of a feature film and two Goyas short films), Metamorphosis by Carla Pereira and Juanfran Jacinto, e Flying (Flying) by Carlos Gómez-Mira.

The Best Special Effects category contains several multiple nominees: Raúl Romanillos and Míriam Piquer, for Salvador Calvo's drama about African immigrants in Spain, Adu (the most nominated film this year with 13, including best film); Mariano Garcia Marty and Ana Rubio for Coven (nine nominations); Raúl Romanillos and Jean-Louis Billiard for Black beach (six applications); and Raúl Romanillos and Míriam Piquer for Unfortunate Stories (Unfortunate Stories) (four nominations). Whichever way the academy leans, the odds look good for Romanillos, who has already won the category six times with a dozen additional nominations!

The 35th edition of the Goya Awards will be held on March 6 in Malaga for the second consecutive year, broadcast on television on TVE and TVE Internacional.
