“I pump the cinephile” the anime film by director Takayuki Hirao
GKIDS, the acclaimed adult and family animation producer and distributor, announced that it has acquired all North American distribution rights to the Japanese animated film dedicated to the passion for cinema, Pump the Cinephile (I pump the cinephile, Eiga Daisuki Pompo-san). Known for his dynamic and maximalist animation sequences, director Takayuki Hirao returns to the director's chair with the production of the brand new CLAP studio.
I pump the cinephile it premiered in Japan on June 4, 2021 and has been a hit for 15 weeks and beyond, with box office takings of ¥ 200.000.000 (about $ 1,8 million) to date. Fueled by the excitement of the film's national release, a crowdfunding campaign to create a 35mm print of the film reached its fundraising goal of 10.000.000 (approximately $ 91.000) in just 11 days.

GKIDS will distribute I pump the cinephile both for the cinema, both in its original Japanese language, and in a brand new version dubbed into English early next year. The North American distribution agreement for all rights was negotiated between GKIDS and AVEX Pictures Inc., which handles international sales.
Synopsis: Pompo is a talented and courageous producer of “Nyallywood”, the world capital of cinema. Though known for B-movies, one day Pompo tells her movie-loving but apprehensive assistant Gene that she will be directing her next script: a delicate drama about an elderly and tormented creative genius starring legendary actor Brando-esque. Martin Braddock, is a young actress looking for her first chance. But when the production heads into chaos, can Gene take up Pompo's challenge and succeed as a director for the first time?
I pump the cinephile it's a cheerful and exuberant ode to the power of films and the joys and pain of the creative process, as a new director and his team devote their lives to researching a “masterpiece”.
Along with director Hirao, the film's key creative team includes art directors Takafumi Nishima and Miu Miyamoto and character designer Shingo Adachi.
The Japanese voice cast includes Hiroya Shimizu, Konomi Koha, Ai Kakuma, Akio Otsuka (Ghost in the Shell, Howl's Moving Castle, Paprika) and Rinka Ōtani.
