The series produced in 1976 under the direction of Isao Takahata, consists of 52 episodes each lasting 22 minutes and is inspired by a story from the book "Cuore" by Edmondo De Amicis; that of the month of May that Maestro Perboni used to dictate to his students. In Italy the series was broadcast on Rai Uno on 20 October 1980, with the theme song sung by "I Ragazzi di Marco", written by Luigi Albertelli and Vince Tempera.

The story begins around the end of the 1800s in the city of Genoa, when many families in Italy were forced to emigrate to America due to the lack of work. The protagonist is little Marco Rossi, a boy of about 10 who lives with his mother Anna, his father Pietro and his older brother Tonio. One morning Marco wakes up full of enthusiasm, because a special day awaits him: finally the family has decided to leave with the gig, for a trip in the mountains, near the city. Marco is careful to check that the horse has had its right daily ration, but his uncle Carlo informs him that Tonio has already taken care of everything. Marco's family suffers from a serious financial crisis, but at least for one day, the parents decide to forget the problems and to allow themselves a day outdoors, where Tonio teaches Marco the first notions on how to ride. to the horse. Marco rides with his mother - Marco from the Apennines to the AndesMarco also discovers that his mother Anna is very good at horseback riding and together with her, he will experience the thrill of a gallop in the middle of the meadows. However Anna holds a difficult secret to reveal to Marco. Given the economic crisis and the debts accumulated by her husband, Anna will be forced to leave for Argentina in search of a job. Back home after the beautiful day, the idyll is abruptly broken by a neighbor who, despite good intentions, informs Marco, who will take care of him when his mother leaves for Argentina. This news upsets the child, who runs away through the dark streets of the city. Marco is found by his uncle Carlo who takes him home and his mother apologizes to him for not telling him the sad truth right away. On the day of departure, Marco, still resentful, does not address any words to his mother all the time and this makes his departure even more sad. When Anna is now on board the ship and calls her son from the bridge, Marco bursts into tears, making him promise to return soon.

Marco, Tonio and dads Pietro - Marco from the Apennines to the AndesFrom that day on, Marco's life changed radically, as he had to become more responsible. To earn some money, he was forced to work in a wine shop without his father's knowledge and at the same time, animated by good will, he continued not to miss a day of school. One day Marco met the Pepe family on the streets of Genoa who entertained passers-by with a puppet show. Mr. Pepe, because of the low income, was left by his wife who had entrusted him with her three daughters: Violetta, Giulietta and Concetta. A deep friendship immediately arises between Marco and Violetta, as being the same age they share the same pain due to the departure of their mother. Marco and Violetta meet when the girl finds the white monkey Peppino, which Tonio had given to Marco. Violetta too soon had to leave with her father, as Mr. Pepe hoped to be successful in Argentina, with his puppet shows. It was then that Marco nurtured the strong feeling of leaving to meet his mother again. His brother Tonio also decided to leave, because in order to keep his engineering studies, he had to move to Milan to work at a railway station. Meanwhile Marco is anxiously awaiting news of his mother and for this reason he frequently goes to the post office in the port, to Signora Gina to find out if any letters have arrived. Unfortunately her mother had stopped writing for some time and Marco had no more news of her. In addition, his father Pietro, doctor and founder of a clinic for the poor, was going through a problematic period of crisis as his work was overwhelmed with debts. This forced him to work all day, which distracted him from taking care of Marco with the right diligence.

The sailor Rocky - Marco from the Apennines to the AndesOne day Marco always together with his inseparable little monkey Pepino, decides to visit a ship moored in the port and here he meets the sailor Rocky, who fascinates him with the stories of extraordinary journeys. He also tells him that if he wanted to venture on the next trip to Brazil, he could always hide on board as a stowaway. That same evening Marco made the drastic decision and after writing a farewell letter to his father, taking advantage of the darkness of the night, he hid among the crates of the ship, ready for the departure of the following morning.
When Pietro returned home, noticing Marco's absence, he immediately understood his intentions to leave, so he went to the port to ask Signora Gina for information, but she hadn't seen him. Only after returning home in the course of the morning did he notice Marco's letter, so he rushed back to the port. Meanwhile, Marco's presence on board had been revealed by the presence of the little monkey Pepino, whom the sailors tried to capture in vain, while Marco begged the ship's cook to be hired, in order to repay the trip to Brazil. Meanwhile, Pietro and Signora Gina get on board, with the intention of recovering Marco, but the boy remains firm in his decision to leave. His father just has to hug him tightly and even with death in his heart, respect the choice to meet his beloved mother again. From that moment Marco begins the great adventure towards a new continent, which will take him from the Italian mountains of the Apennines to the Andes of South America.

The cook Leonardo and Marco in the kitchen -Marco from the Apennines to the AndesDuring the trip, the relations between Marco and the chef Leonardo are certainly not the best, as the boy, even with good will in his work, often gets into a lot of trouble due to his inexperience as a cook. However, as the days go by, Leonardo grows fond of that enterprising little boy and so is filled with sadness when Marco has to leave the ship near the landing in Rio de Janeiro. When they arrive at their destination, Rocky and Leonardo accompany Marco aboard a lifeboat to an emigrant ship, where he can embark thanks to the money earned as a cook. On the ship Marco will find many Italians and foreigners united by the same hope, that of finding work and making a fortune in the Americas. Marco immediately stands out for his generosity, as he shares with the other children the food supplies that have been given to him by the cook. This allows him to make friends with Mrs. Renata, her son Nino and her father-in-law Federico, who left for Santa Fè to meet her husband again. During the voyage a violent storm breaks out and this causes a lot of inconvenience to the passengers and to the captain of the ship, forced to a difficult maneuver to get out of danger. Finally, after a difficult journey, Marco was able to disembark at the port of Buenos Aires in Argentina, together with his new friends, with a heart full of desire and hope to hug his mother again. Going to the bank to exchange Italian money for Argentine pesos, Marco was robbed without his knowledge, by a thief who pretended to bump into him carelessly. Greetings Renata and her travel companions Marco went to the house on his uncle Meleli, where his mother was supposed to stay.

Unfortunately there is no shortage of nasty surprises and instead of his uncle Meleli, a middle-aged lady now lives in that house, who advises Marco to get information about his mother, from the family where he worked before, as Francesco Meleli left for Bahia Blanca because of its debt. Then turning to the address he had received, Marco asked for news of his mother, but not even the kind maid and the old lady of that house were able to give any useful information. Marco just has to leave for Bahia Blanca in search of his uncle, but just when he has to buy train tickets, he realizes that he has been robbed. Seized by desperation, he tries in every way to get on the convoy, but is stopped by the controllers and after a mad rush he falls exhausted to the ground, while the train leaves for its destination.
Marco looks for news of his mother at the immigration office, but they can only indicate the date of arrival of Anna Rossi in Argentina, because it is written in the registers. When Marco has lost all hope, aimlessly and without money, his attention falls on the sign of a restaurant that bears the word "Liguria", his region of origin. He also asked the innkeeper if he had heard of his mother, but even in this case the answer was negative. But they knew Pepe's puppet company and his daughters, whom Marco met in a small square not far from the restaurant, thanks to the complicity of the little monkey Pepino. The happiness in having met was great, so that evening Marco was a guest of his dear friends in the Liguria restaurant and Pepe promised Marco to accompany him with his family to Bahia Blanca, in search of his uncle. Having taken the precise address of Bahia Blanca at the Italian consulate, Marco was ready to leave, but Pepe did not yet have the money to follow him. So they organized a puppet show at the "Liguria" inn, where the success was such that the host managed to collect a fair amount of money due to the large number of customers who had come to see the show. After being rewarded by the host with a large sum of money, Marco, Pepe, Violetta, Concetta, Giulietta and the little monkey Pepino, left with their puppet wagon, for Bahia Blanca.

Mr. Pepe and his daughter Concetta talk to Marco - Marco from the Apennines to the AndesAfter traveling almost 600 km, after 10 days the company of street performers arrived in Bahia Blanca and Mr. Pepe having no more money with him had to quarrel with the owner of a hotel, who required the advance payment of the accommodation. Meanwhile Marco goes to Signor Moretti's house, at the address indicated to him by the consul. Even here he had no news of his mother and his uncle Meleli, as he had probably changed his name to escape his creditors. Meanwhile, Pepe and his daughters, after the success of their last show at a trattoria, managed to earn the money necessary to pay for accommodation and dinner. After the beautiful evening they are all happy, except Marco who, given the remote hopes of meeting his mother again, decides to leave for Buenos Aires. Near the station he met a man, chased away from the train because without a ticket, Marco had compassion for him and so he invited him to an inn to offer him a lemonade. It happened that Marcel (this is the name of the man) had met Francesco Meleli, but that he had died two weeks earlier., But perhaps with some research he could even have news of Anna Rossi. Marco and Marcel make an appointment for a next meeting, but Pepe wants to see this matter clearly so together with his daughter Concetta he accompanies Marco to the appointment. The day Marcel even shows up with a letter from Anna, indicating the address of his home in Buenos Aires and Marcel, in return for Marco's generosity, pays him the train ticket for the way back.

Many questions remain open: why was Marcel so generous with Marco and how did he get news of Anna Rossi? But above all: will Marco be able to meet his mother again?
