Di Gi Charat features characters who were the mascots of Broccoli and the Gamers! retail chain. The franchise began in 1998 and features events from manga, anime, video games, and voice actors. The franchise follows alien hybrid cat Di Gi Charat who wants to become a superstar while working at an anime store chain called Gamer.

The original 16-episode television anime series Di Gi Charat aired in 1999. Synch-Point released part of the series in North America on DVD in 2005 and Sentai Filmworks released the series on DVD in 2013.

Bushiroad, as part of its new partnership with media company Broccoli, envisaged a collaboration between Di Gi Charat and Bushiroad's Lost Decade smartphone game, as part of a master plan to "reboot" Broccoli's Di Gi Charat franchise. Bushiroad said the Di Gi Charat franchise was a pioneer in the "moe culture".
