Baboon Animation has founded the new branch, Baboon Animation Africa

Multi-Emmy-winning company Baboon Animation has created a new subsidiary, Baboon Animation Africa (BAA), partnering with the established African Animation Network (AAN) to build a new animation business paradigm based on diversity, equity and inclusion. The move is like a step towards developing a socially responsible animation industry on the continent.

"We are building on the success of our new WarnerMedia show, Garbage Boy and Trash Can (Garbage boy and garbage can). True ownership of African creators is our goal and we have the relationships to do so. AAN has pioneered this approach through its social impact goals and together we are expanding. We have five more groundbreaking initiatives to announce in the next six months, ”said Mike de Seve, president of Baboon Animation. "We are developing raw talent and shows in a fair and responsible way that keeps the creators in the driver's seat."

Baboon's leadership in African markets began in 2018. Nick Wilson, founder and head of projects and content at AAN, invited de Seve to join a pan-African talent development partnership with the Annecy International Animation Festival / MIFA . This platform identified Ridwan Moshood, who created Garbage Boy and Trash Can, as one of Africa's top talents.

“Baboon is a perfect creative partner for this venture,” noted Wilson, who developed and produced Africa's first half-hour animated comedy for adults in 2015 and formed AAN in 2016. “We have relationships with the biggest stars. of comedy and animation talents in Africa. Word has got around that we are the people to turn to if you have a show. We are the first to produce African shows in Africa for a global media company ”.

Baboon Animation and African Animation Network expect to attract top talent through various channels, including AAN's upcoming competition The Great Big African Animation Pitch (TGBAAP), scheduled for early 2022. This AAN-Baboon alliance will help underrepresented series creators sit at the table in the fast-growing African animation industry.

“We are changing the way animation development is done and we are challenging everyone to do the same,” added de Seve. “This is what a true partnership looks like”.
