On this page you will find articles, reviews and news about Studio Ghibli animated films and Hayao Miyazaki e I.
If you are an animation lover, the name Studio Ghibli will surely sound familiar to you. And if you don't know it yet, get ready: you are about to discover a magical world, made of stories that speak directly to the heart. Studio Ghibli is not just a production house, but a true institution in the world of animated cinema, which has given the public unforgettable masterpieces and characters that seem alive.
The beginning of a legend
Studio Ghibli was born in 1985, founded by two giants of Japanese animation: Hayao Miyazaki e I, together with producer Toshio Suzuki. The name “Ghibli” has a curious origin: it refers to a hot wind from the Sahara, but for Miyazaki it also represented the idea of bringing a breath of fresh air to the world of animation.
And what a breath! Already with their first film, “Laputa – Castle in the Sky” (1986), you can tell these guys weren't playing around. They set the tone: deep stories, authentic characters, visually stunning worlds, and a soundtrack that sticks in your heart (thanks to the genius composer Joe hisaishi).
Capolavori without tempo
If there is one film that put Studio Ghibli on the world map, it is definitely “My Neighbor Totoro” (1988). This film has no conventional plot, but it is like a warm hug that talks about childhood, nature and family. Totoro, the giant forest spirit, has become a cultural icon in Japan and around the world. I dare you to watch it without smiling.
Then, there is “Spirited Away” (2001), which led Studio Ghibli to win a Oscar as best animated film. This masterpiece tells the story of Chihiro, a little girl who gets lost in a magical world and must save her parents who have been transformed into pigs. It is a modern fairy tale, full of symbolism and unforgettable moments, such as the mysterious Haku or No-Face, that creature you will not easily forget.
And how not to quote “Princess Mononoke” (1997)? An epic film that explores the relationship between man and nature, with a powerful ecological message that is more relevant today than ever. Or “Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea” (2008), a very sweet story of friendship that seems to come from a dream.
The Art of Storytelling
What makes Studio Ghibli films so special? Perhaps it’s the way they manage to mix simple elements with profound themes. They tell us about love, growth, loss, respect for nature and the value of human relationships. And they do so without ever treating the viewer like a child, even though the younger audience is always at the center.
The protagonists of Ghibli films are never perfect heroes, but real people, with weaknesses, fears and dreams. Miyazaki in particular has a unique sensitivity in creating strong and independent female characters, from Chihiro to San, Princess Mononoke.
And then there's the aesthetics. Every frame of a Ghibli film could be framed and hung on a wall. The details of the landscapes, the attention to detail and the use of color create worlds so rich that it feels like you can enter them.
An everlasting legacy
Even though Miyazaki and Takahata have retired several times (only to return, because let's face it: they can't stay away from animation), Studio Ghibli continues to live on and produce magic. In 2023, they released “The Boy and the Heron”, Miyazaki's latest film, which has already enchanted audiences.
In the meantime, the Studio has opened the The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, near Tokyo, a place where you can fully immerse yourself in their universe. Oh, and if you are a die-hard fan, in 2022 the ghibli park, a theme park that feels like a gateway to the worlds you've always dreamed of.
Why Studio Ghibli is important
Studio Ghibli reminds us of the importance of slowing down, of observing the world with curious eyes, of finding beauty in the little things. Each film is an invitation to dream and reflect, and in a world that is moving faster and faster, this is a precious lesson.
So, if you haven't seen their films yet, what are you waiting for? Get your popcorn ready, find a cozy blanket, and let yourself be transported by these masterpieces. And remember: there's a little Ghibli magic inside each of us.
