Craig Miller was honored at WGAW's AWC Animation Writing Award 2020

The writer of animated TV series Craig Miller (See The Smurfs, Curious George, Pocket Dragon Adventures) will receive the award for writing animated series Animation Writers Caucus Animation Writing Award by the Writers Guild of America West 2020 at the AWC Virtual Awards Ceremony on November 24.

Marv Wolfman, a comic writer and Miller contributor, will present the AWC Lifetime Achievement Award to Miller in recognition of his illustrious career and contributions to the animation field.

“In his long and illustrious career, Craig has been a tireless advocate of animation writers, working diligently to nurture writers like him under a WGA contract. The WGAW Board of Directors is proud and honored to give him this well-deserved award ”.

Native of Los Angeles Craig Miller he earned degrees in pedagogy and social psychology from Santa Monica College and UCLA, before starting his career which made a great contribution to pop culture.

Miller began his career in Hollywood as an advertising executive, working as a consultant for Lucasfilm, Warner Bros., Disney, Universal and a number of other studios. Miller quickly found himself working alongside George Lucas, Jim Henson and a number of creative artists on a long list of projects, including The empire strikes again, the dark crystal e The Muppets take Manhattan.

For the past 30 years, however, Miller has written, developed, and produced television series with over 300 credits to his name, including the anthology series. The Hunger, GI Joe: a true American hero e Beast Wars: Transformers (which won a Daytime Emmy in 1997). Having contributed to classic animated series such as The real Ghostbusters, the Smurfs and the Emmy-winning PBS series Curious George, the impact and influence of Miller's work span generations of artists and creators, who have grown up looking at his content.

In 1998, along with Wolfman, Miller co-created, produced and was a story editor on the series  The enchanted world of Pocket Dragons (Pocket Dragon Adventures), a 104-episode series that was the first animated series to go into production under the WGA contract. The show aired from the late 90s to early 2000s in over 50 countries and was nominated for the Humanitas Award - awarded for film and television writing intended to promote human dignity, meaning and freedom. - in 2000.

Miller has lectured and taken part in animation events around the world, including the Annecy Animation Festival in France, Cartoons on the Bay / The International Conference on Television Animation in Italy, and at San Diego Comic Con, just to name a few.

These days, Miller spends much of his time developing projects for companies around the world, working on shows for audiences in China, Australia, France, Italy and Dubai. The book about his time at Lucasfilm, Memories of Star Wars, was released in December 2019.

A member of the WGAW since 1988, Miller has served the Guild extensively over the years and is currently the president of the WGAW's Animation Writers Caucus.

The WGAW's AWC Animation Writing Award is awarded to members of the Animation Writers Caucus or Writers Guild who have advanced the culture of animation in film and television over the years and have made an outstanding contribution to the animation writer profession. Founded in 1994, WGAW's Animation Writers Caucus represents over 600 animation writers and works to promote economic and creative conditions in the field. Through organizing efforts, educational events, and networking opportunities, the Guild's AWC is a leading advocate of animation writers.
