Disney prepares the sequel to “The Lion King” with director Barry Jenkins

Disney Studios reached out to Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlit, winner of the Oscar for Best Picture, for directing the new sequel de  The Lion King. Disney's 2019 live-action Lion King sequel went in for $ 1,6 billion. Its PASTEL partners, Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, are expected to participate in the project as producers.

Barry Jenkins' comment

“Helping my sister raise two boys in the 90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. "Having the opportunity to work with Disney to expand this magnificent story of friendship, love and legacy, while promoting my work that tells the lives and souls of people, within the African diaspora is a dream come true."

The sequel has a first draft film by Jeff Nathanson, who scripted the latest Pride Lands adventure. His screenwriting credits also include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Rush Hour 2 & 3 e Catch Me If You Can,, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. The story will reportedly delve into the mythology behind the beloved Lion King characters, including the origins of Mufasa.

Jon Favreau directed the "live-action" Lion King, based on the classic Disney animated film. The ambitious production built on photorealistic CG and virtual reality techniques developed for his 2016 film The jungle book. The film also sparked debate, over what qualifies as an animated film, with the growing prevalence of CG characters, locations and effects across all genres of film.

If considered an animated film, 2019 The Lion King is the highest-grossing motion picture of all time - however, the studio positioned the title as a live-action adaptation, despite the absence of live actors. It also set the record for the highest-grossing Walt Disney Pictures musical, remake and film of all time and ranked seventh on the all-time gross box office chart.

Plus the movie  Moonlight, by Jenkins was also nominated for an Oscar for its adaptation If Beale Street Could Talk. The director is working with Disney Studios on another project: a biopic by choreographer Alvin Ailey (via Searchlight) and recently completed his Amazon Prime Video limited series based on Colson Whitehead's National Book Award and Pulitzer winning book. The Underground Railroad (The underground railway).
