The songs in Italian are sung by Bobby Solo and Rossana Casale. The story is partly inspired by Elvis Presley; in fact, the rooster costume seen in a scene of the film is similar to those worn by the American singer, while the nickname is “The King”. Chanticleer is instead the name of the rooster protagonist of one of the Canterbury Tales. Also the rooster present in the Roman de Renart, friend of the fox protagonist, bears a similar name: Chanteclair

The film features the original voices of Glen Campbell, Christopher Plummer, Phil Harris (in his last film role before his retirement and death in 1995), Charles Nelson Reilly, Sorrell Booke, Sandy Duncan, Eddie Deezen, Ellen Greene and Toby Scott Ganger (making his film debut). The film was released in the UK on August 2, 1991 and in the United States and Canada on April 3, 1992.

History

Chanticleer is a proud rooster whose crow wakes up the sun every morning, or so the other farm animals believe. His song makes the other animals happy and frees the farm from downpours. However, one morning, Chanticleer is attacked by a rooster sent by the "Grand Duke of Owls"; Chanticleer wins, but forgets that he has to sing in the sun, and the sun rises without him singing. The other animals, believing Chanticleer to be a cheat, mock him and he rushes off the farm. Chanticleer's absence causes a storm and begins the "Grand Duke's" reign of terror on the farm.

The story continues in a novel as a mother reads it to her son Edmond, who is exacerbated by the impending storm flood on his parents' farm. As his mother goes home to help Edmond out of the storm, Edmond calls Chanticleer to return. Instead, he confronts the Grand Duke of Owls, who expresses his anger at Edmond's lack of attention to the owl's needs and transforms Edmond into an animated kitten, turning the rest of the world into an animated watercolor version.

Before the Grand Duke can devour Edmond, Patou enters the room and bites his leg, while both animals confront Edmond searches for his torch, the Duke is distracted by the appearance of the other farm animals and is ultimately pushed away by the glow of a torch. The farm animals tell Edmond that they too seek the return of the singer, as his singing is the only thing that can bring sunlight to the farm.

Meanwhile, at the Grand Duke's lair, he learns of Edmond's trip to the city and his nephew Hunch sends to arrest Edmond and the other animals. Suddenly Edmond and the others when they arrive in the animated version of the city of Las Vegas, they go looking for Chanticleer. They find Chanticleer at the casino, who is now making a living as an Elvis Presley imitator. Its success made singer Goldie the Pheasant jealous. Edmond and his friends try to talk to Chanticleer, but Pinky and the Toads bodyguards try to get them out of the way.

Meanwhile, back on the farm, the flooding gets worse and the farm animals lose communication with Edmond as the Grand Duke and his owls remove all animal lantern batteries to prevent the owls from eating them.

Edmond and his friends dress up to send Chanticleer a note, but he is distracted by Goldie, who has fallen in love with him. Edmond's attempt to reason with Goldie goes awry as he and his friends are captured by bodyguards and locked up in a trailer. Hunch ties them into a trap to try to finish the group, but inadvertently fails, they break free from the trap and go to Chanticleer. Out of her guilt, Goldie shows Chanticleer the note Edmond sent her and the two ride them on a motorcycle from the casino to get their friends to go to the farm.

Chanticleer and the gang escape from the bodyguards in a chase car and steal a helicopter, which they use to return to the farm, where the animals are in trouble and are about to be eaten by the Grand Duke and his owls. After using the helicopter light to temporarily chase away the owls, Edmond and the others try to get Chanticleer to sing, but his voice is still consumed by the earlier rejection he received when he didn't sing.

The Grand Duke seizes the opportunity and tries to suffocate Chanticleer before he resumes singing, but Edmond helps him by calling his name several times, although the Duke suffocates him to silence him. Impressed by Edmond's bravery, the other animals start chanting his name in support of him, when the Duke gets angry he turns into a huge tornado.

Chanticleer finally regains confidence and sings flying like a shooting star and the sun rises away from the owls, shrinking the Duke to the size of a faint insect. The floods begin to subside and Edmond becomes a real boy again. Edmond wakes up in the real world, where seeing his mother believes his adventures were just a dream.

However, Edmond still believes in the Chanticleer and tracks down the novel, merging the real world and the world of the Chanticleer into one world. where to see his mother believes her adventures were just a dream.

Characters

Edmond, (played in his human form by actor Toby Scott Ganger) is the 6-year-old son of a farmer to whom his mother, Dory, is reading the story of Chanticleer. He is turned into a kitten by the Grand Duke after attempting to recall Chanticleer. Although his human form has been lost to the Duke, Edmond arranges the animals to bring Chanticleer back to the farm after the flood begins. He slowly begins to learn from his mistakes and stops being afraid.

Chanticleer, a rooster who lives on a farm with many other animals, who love and adore him. When the sun rises without his singing, his friends, believing that he was lying about his singing raising the sun (a fact he himself thought was true), reject it, leading to the adventures of Edmond and the other. Reduced to a miserable state, he goes to town and becomes a popular singer. Through her manager Pinky, he meets Goldie and falls in love with her at first sight. But soon his friends come to town and apologize. He and Goldie are then brought back to the farm, so that he can save her. The character is based on super rock star Elvis Presley.

Patou is a Basset Hound friend of both Chanticleer and Edmond, and plays the narrator of the story. He despises the Grand Duke and is devoted to Edmond's cause to bring Chanticleer home. He is brave and reasonable, but a bit temperamental. His attempt to find Chanticleer is hampered by the fact that he cannot tie his shoes (which he wears due to bunions, in which he is a racing gag). However, in the end, he finally manages to figure out how to tie them well, after Edmond's teaching.

Grand Duke of Owls is a magical owl who despises Chanticleer. He hears Edmond's call for Chanticleer in the real world and plans to eat him alive as a death penalty. First, he turns Edmond into a kitten to make him "more digestible" like the other kittens, but to his dismay, Patou stops the Duke from eating Edmond just in time. The Duke is a powerful and evil creature of the night, who wishes to eat smaller animals and command other evil owls to carry out his orders. He hates sunlight, like all owls, and retracts when the light illuminates him. Additionally, he possesses a magical breath that can transform anyone into any creature, such as when he transforms Edmond into his kitten form. He apparently manages to kill Edmond by strangling him to death with his magical breath. He is chased away by Hunch towards the end of the film after being shrunk to a size smaller than that of Hunch and the farm mice and chicks, driving them both away from Chanticleer's farm.

Goldie, a singing pheasant who works with Pinky. She is initially jealous of Chanticleer for stealing her spotlight, but she falls in love with him after meeting him. Pinky initially tells her that Edmond is a bad kitty, but when Pinky has tied Edmond and her friends with her, she realizes that they are actually Chanticleer's friends and tells Chanticleer that they tried to text him. After this, Chanticleer manages to escape from the set of Pinky's new movie and returns to the farm with her friends, Edmond and Goldie. Goldie stays with Chanticleer on the farm, they marry and have two children.

Snipes, is a magpie. He, Edmond, Patou and Peepers travel to town in a toy box floating on floodwaters, with Snipes more interested in exploring the town and its attractions than actually helping his friends. Being claustrophobic, this poses a problem when he punches holes in the box trying to escape and reach the open air. He despises garbage and dirt, but he loves the food served in the city when they walk into a restaurant where he sings Chanticleer, especially lasagna.

Peepers is a mouse with glasses. Because of this, she is initially terrified of Edmond, even though he tries to convince everyone that he is a boy who is the victim of a spell. She was willing to accept him for being a cat if he brought her and the others into town.

chicken, the Duke's pygmy nephew and chief henchman. Hunch likes to hum "The Ride of the Valkyries". He is stupid, but extremely aggressive. He carries an all-purpose Swiss Army Knife in a lidless can strapped to his back and uses his various bladed items, tools, and household items (like a fly swatter) as weapons. A recurring little gag in the film was that every time the Duke breathed on him, his magic turned Hunch into a randomly different creature. Eventually, Hunch takes over and chases away the violent uncle with his fly swatter.

Pinky, a southern fox who loves money and golf. He is also Chanticleer's manager in town. His job is to make sure Chanticleer never feels the urge to go home by convincing him that his friends hate him, making it easy to profit from Chanticleer's singing skills. He secretly works for the Duke and lies to Goldie about Edmond being a "bad kitty". Chanticleer and Goldie, who have fallen in love with each other, run off with Edmond's friends, foiling Pinky's plans and destroying her limo at the same time.

Stuey, an always nervous pig from the Chanticleer farm. Whenever someone mentions owls, he starts to go crazy and sometimes snorts and whimpers. While Edmond, Snipes, Patou and Peepers go to town to take Chanticleer back to the farm, he stays behind to keep the owls at bay. He is nearly eaten by the Duke, but is saved when the group returns with Chanticleer, illuminating the Duke with a helicopter light.

Minnie, a rabbit from the farm.

Farmyard Bully, a falcon servant of the Duke sent by him to prevent Chanticleer from singing.

The henchmen of the Duke's owl.

Dory, Edmond's mother
Frank, Edmond's father
Scott, one of Edmond's older brothers
Mark, one of Edmond's older brothers
