Fairy tales are fantasy - the 1987 anime series

Fairy tales are fantasy (Japanese title グ リ ム 名作 劇場 Gurimu meisaku gekijo) also known as Grimm Masterpiece Theater in the original version, is a Japanese anime anthology series from Nippon Animation. The episodes are adaptations of a variety of folk tales and fairy tales and, despite the name, are not limited to the tales of the Brothers Grimm.

The series ran over two seasons. Gurimu Meisaku Gekijou (グ リ ム 名作 劇場) was broadcast in Japan by the Asahi TV network from October 21, 1987 to March 30, 1988, for a total of 24 episodes. Shin Gurimu Meisaku Gekijou (新 グ リ ム 名作 劇場) was also broadcast by TV Asahi from 2 October 1988 to 26 March 1989. In Italy, the total 47 episodes were broadcast by Italia 1 in 1989.

Some of the episodes of the series have been edited by De Agostini on newsstands under the title of The thousand and one fairy tales, with an introduction to the episodes by Cristina D'Avena.

History

The series is the faithful transposition of the most famous fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, such as snow-whiteCinderellaThe Sleeping BeautyRapunzelHänsel and Gretel, etc., some of which span multiple episodes.

Since the Brothers Grimm's original fairy tales also tell violent and cruel stories, they are also represented in the animation of Nippon Animation. This led to cuts and censorship of the original anime.

The series is suitable for an adult audience, as it does not spare scenes of violence, ambiguous attitudes, nude scenes: all elements that, in pat ria, have created many problems for the series, which was closed prematurely. In fact, it was the specific intention of the authors to scrupulously follow the dictates of the Brothers Grimm and accentuating, sometimes in a radical way, the macabre tones and the dark aspects.

In Italy, with the exception of a small censorship of episode 6, many other decidedly strong scenes for a childish audience were spared.

Fairy tales are fantasy includes two series. The first series, known in Japan as Grimm Masterpiece Theater (グ リ ム 名作 劇場, Gurimu Meisaku Gekijō), aired from 21 October 1987 to 30 March 1988, for a total of 24 episodes. The second series, known in Japan as New Grimm Masterpiece Theater (新 グ リ ム 名作 劇場, Shin Gurimu Meisaku Gekijō), aired between October 2, 1988 and March 26, 1989, for a total of 23 episodes. Both series were produced by Nippon Animation in collaboration with Asahi Broadcasting Corporation of Osaka. It has also been localized under the English name of the series.

The anthology of fairy tales was broadcast in the United States by Nickelodeon and in local stations throughout Latin America.
