Galaxy Angel – The 2001 anime, manga and video game series
“Galaxy Angel” is a sci-fi metaseries with bishōjo elements that includes anime, manga and dating simulation video games. Launched by Broccoli in July 2000 under the name Project GA, this series explored several narrative platforms. The “Galaxy Angel Party” anime and manga feature a comedic plot set in an alternate universe, while the video games and main manga focus on a more romance and action-oriented story.
This is followed by “Galaxy Angel II,” a trilogy of sequel games introduced between 2006 and 2009, featuring an entirely new cast, known as the “Rune Angel Troupe.” This new series also introduces the Brave Heart chassis, which can be combined with any of the Angels, adding an element of novelty to the gameplay. Among the characters, we find Apricot Sakuraba, connected to Milfeulle Sakuraba from the original series as her younger sister, demonstrating a direct link between the two ensembles of characters.
Like the original Galaxy Angel, “Galaxy Angel II” also spawned manga adaptations and comic anime spin-offs, further expanding the series' universe.
Galaxy Angel's influence was not limited to digital and print media. The popularity of the series in Japan led to the creation of a musical titled “GALAXY ANGEL the musical“, which ran in 2005. This show included cast members also involved in the production of “Galaxy Angel II,” establishing a bridge between the various iterations of the franchise.
History
Commander Takuto Meyers leads the 2nd Frontier Fleet when the exiled Prince Eonia launches his coup. An orbital bombardment decimates much of the royal family on the homeworld, and large sections of the Imperial Fleet are destroyed in a surprise attack. Unable to establish contact with 2nd Fleet headquarters, Meyers waits for orders until the arrival of three members of the Angel Wing, pursued by an enemy fleet of unmanned ships. Having destroyed the enemy fleet, Meyers leads his fleet towards the hiding place of the Elsior, a battleship usually used only for ceremonies by the Imperial Guards, and meets his old instructor Lufte, now Commodore, who entrusts him with command of the Elsior and of the Angel Wing to escort Prince Shiva, sole survivor of the royal family, to the Rhombe system where loyalist forces are gathering for a counterattack, as the 2nd fleet has already been destroyed.
Before the engines can be repaired, more enemy ships arrive. Commodore Lufte assumes command of the remaining fleet and lures the enemy ships elsewhere, allowing the Elsior to head towards Rhombe, repelling enemy attacks along the way, including elements of the Imperial Fleet who have switched sides to join Prince Eonia.
While attempting to reach the 3rd Fleet at Rhombe, the Elsior discovers the destroyed remains of the 3rd Fleet and falls into a trap by Prince Eonia's main fleet. After fighting the enemy forces, they receive a new rendezvous point from the 3rd Fleet. Once reached, Allied reinforcements force the enemy forces to retreat, with Commodore Lufte reaching the Rhombe system before the Elsior.
Subsequently, the Loyalist fleet launches an operation to destroy Prince Eonia's main fleet in the Nadler system, inflicting a major defeat on the enemy. The admirals and high-ranking officers of the Imperial Navy decide to hold a ball in honor of Prince Shiva and plan to transfer Meyers to command another fleet, while the Angel Wings and the Elsior remain to guard Prince Shiva on Fargo, an orbital city around the planet Rhombe.
During a routine visit to the ship's hangar, Meyers meets a mysterious girl named Noah, who asks Meyers for one of the Emblem Frames. When Meyers refuses, Noah gets angry, promises to create stronger ones and disappears around a corner. Meyers, ignoring the incident, takes his chosen one to the ball, where Prince Eonia appears with several soldiers in an attempt to take Prince Shiva into custody. However, it turns out that Prince Eonia and the soldiers are only holograms and not physically present. At this time, the Eonia fleet launches a surprise attack, causing severe damage to the port facilities.
Meyers returns to the ship with Prince Shiva and, after the retreat of the enemy fleet, the Black Moon, a counterpart to the White Moon, appears and destroys much of Fargo and the Loyalist fleet with a laser. Meyers and the Angel Wing desperately fight to reach the Black Moon, constantly producing attack satellites and unmanned ships, before Noah unleashes an EMP blast that leaves the Elsior, the Emblem Frames and the Loyalist fleet powerless, excluding sensors and communications.
When the situation seems hopeless, suddenly the Elsior and the Emblem Frames recover energy beyond their original levels, and the Emblem Frames develop wings. They manage to overcome the defensive line and damage the Black Moon, forcing Prince Eonia into a temporary retreat and bringing the situation to a stalemate. However, the Emblem Frames subsequently lose their wings and their energy level drops below normal.
As the loyalist fleet gathers on the other side of Rhombe, Commodore Lufte takes command. The Elsior's chief engineer, Creta, and Prince Shiva provide information on the capabilities of the Elsior and the Emblem Frames, and the presence of a weapon capable of destroying the Black Moon, stored in the White Moon. During the briefing, it is mentioned that Noah was spotted on other ships and port facilities before the attack, but she disappeared in smoke when the guards attempted to interrogate her.
The Elsior and the Loyalist fleet then head to the White Moon to recover the weapon. Sherry, Prince Eonia's second-in-command, attempts to stop them along the way but fails, sacrificing herself in an attempt to ram her flagship into the Elsior, although the Angel Wings manage to destroy her ship before impact. At the White Moon, Lady Shatoyan, the Holy Mother of the White Moon, reveals that the White Moon is a weapons factory just like the Black Moon, but those who discovered it decided to keep it a secret and use the technology only for the Well. Lady Shatoyan removes the limiters from the Emblem Frames and installs the Canon Chrono Break on the Elsior.

Galaxy Angel characters
In the final battle, after defeating the Hell Hounds, Prince Eonia's elite fighter wing, Noah modifies the structure of their Emblem Frames causing them to grow wings, a process that consumes the pilots turning them into soulless zombies. After destroying their fighters, the Elsior takes position and destroys Prince Eonia's flagship with Canon Chrono Break. Later, Noah reveals that his form was only a deception to trick Prince Eonia, who wanted to use the Lost Technology to create an era of peace and prosperity, to launch his coup, so that the Black Moon could join the Moon White and evolve further. As the Black Moon attempts to merge with the White Moon, Meyers and the Angel Wing break through a screen of attack satellites to use Canon Chrono Break on the Black Moon, but before it can complete the charge, the Black Moon unleashes all of its power over them, disabling them, except for the Emblem Frame piloted by Meyers' chosen heroine.
