GKIDS films first Takahata / Miyazaki 'Panda movie! Go Panda! '

GKIDS has acquired the North American distribution rights of Panda! Go Panda !, the 1972 film directed by Oscar-nominated Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata (The Tale of Princess Kaguya) and written by fellow Academy Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki (The Enchanted City) .

The film, presented in high definition with newly restored colors, will be released in theaters and on home entertainment platforms this year, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Produced by TMS Entertainment, the lighthearted comedy was first released at the height of the 1972 "panda craze", following the loan of a pair of giant pandas from China to Japan's Ueno Zoo. Both Pandas are included in the next version! Go Panda! (1972) and Rainy Day Circus (1973), collectively released as Panda! Go Panda! by GKIDS.

“In addition to serving as a vital reference point in the history of animation, Panda! Go Panda! it's an exuberant and enjoyable story that will have you humming the theme song for days, ”said GKIDS President David Jesteadt. "The film has never looked so good and we are thrilled to be able to share it with audiences more widely for an important anniversary milestone."

Plot: Mimiko is a cheerful girl who is left alone while her grandmother is away. When little Panny Panda and her father Papanda come across her house, Mimiko welcomes them as her new family. The adventures ensue as Mimiko discovers the challenges of caring for her new sweet friends. Directed by Isao Takahata and based on a concept by Hayao Miyazaki, Panda! Go Panda! is a fascinating early career classic from two animation legends before they founded the award-winning Studio Ghibli.
