History

During Hotel Transylvania's 125th anniversary celebration, Mavis hears Dracula's plans to retire and leave the hotel management to her. She tells Johnny that she eagerly tells Dracula about his plans to renovate the hotel. Worried about Johnny ruining the hotel, Dracula lies to him that there is a real estate law that only allows monsters to own the hotel, disappointing Johnny.

Van Helsing decides to help Johnny by using a beam that turns people into monsters and vice versa; after testing it on his guinea pig Gigi, he uses it on Johnny who transforms into a dragon-like monster. Learning about the monster Johnny, Dracula tries to bring him back to normal, but accidentally transforms into a human and breaks the ray crystal. Van Helsing tells Dracula and Johnny that they can still get back to normal by getting a new crystal found in a cave in South America, so Dracula and Johnny set out on a journey in search of the crystal.

Dracula's friends Frank, Wayne, Griffin and Murray also end up becoming human, after drinking from a ray-contaminated fountain. Mavis and Ericka confront Van Helsing after learning news about Dracula and Johnny, but he warns them of the beam's effects, as people who become monsters continue to mutate and become more hostile as time goes on. With that in mind, the rest of the gang heads to South America to find Dracula and Johnny.

While traveling through the South American jungle, Dracula and Johnny begin to make friends, and eventually Dracula begins to confess that he lied about the monster real estate law, but the rest of the group find them. Things go wrong when Dracula admits to his deception regarding the hotel being handed over to Mavis and Johnny. This prompts a distraught Johnny to believe that Dracula does not consider him a family member and to mutate further before escaping.

Mavis goes to look for Johnny while Dracula and the rest of the gang go to look for the crystal. Mavis finds Johnny, but the transformation has made him very unstable. He leads him to the cave where they finally find the crystal. When Mavis tries to get Johnny back to normal, nothing happens because he's too hectic. In desperation, Dracula lets himself be captured by Johnny and becomes convinced about how wrong he was about Johnny and how he now sees the best in him, finally recognizing him as a worthy member of his family. This brings Johnny back to himself, and he is brought back to human form.

With Dracula and his friends back to normal, they return home only to find that the hotel has been destroyed by Gigi. After bringing Gigi back to normal, Dracula complains about losing her. He soon decides to let Mavis and Johnny rebuild to their liking.

A year later, Mavis and Johnny show Dracula the rebuilt Hotel Transylvania.
