Johnny Blaze rides again in the new GHOST RIDER series

Earlier this week, Marvel released a teaser image di Ryan Stegman e Mars Garcia declaring 2022 "Year of vengeance" in anticipation of 50th anniversary of Ghost Rider. Today the publisher announced to celebrate the milestone that Johnny Blaze, the OG Ghost Rider, will be starring in an ongoing new series that will debut this February by the writer. Benjamin Percy and artist Cory Smith. No colorists, writers or additional members of the creative team were named in the announcement.

Here's how Marvel described the new Ghost Rider series:

Known for his exciting work on titles such as WOLVERINE and X-FORCE, Percy will put his devilish twist on the Ghost Rider myth, evoking all the scary elements of the more classic Ghost Rider stories as he leads the Spirit of Vengeance into a new era. And Cory Smith, known for his brutally beautiful artwork on titles like CONAN THE BARBARIAN, is eager to bring the red-hot action and hellish horror that only Ghost Rider can deliver! Together, this team of creators is destined to create the most explosive era of this Ghost Rider!

Johnny Blaze has the perfect life: a wife and two children, a job in an auto repair shop and a provincial community that supports him… But Johnny is not doing well. He has nightmares of monsters when he sleeps. And he has bloody visions when he's awake. This life begins to feel like a prison. And there's a spirit in him that begs to break out!

In a statement announcing the series, writer Benjamin Percy described some of the influences for the book:

“I'm a horror head. I grew up reading Stephen King, watching John Carpenter, and listening to Black Sabbath, and when it came to comics, I always looked for the dark and the weird first, which means I've read a lot of Ghost Rider. That flaming skull. That spiked leather jacket. That monstrous bike that spits clouds of sulphurous exhaust. Until today, the sight of the character whizzing along a highway at midnight makes my heart spin like a four-stroke engine.

“Ghost Rider is probably the best designed character, but arguably the heaviest metal of all comics. It would have been tough to write this series at any point in my life, but launching it on the 50th anniversary feels particularly (un) holy to me. Cory Smith is killing him with art and we will honor the past as we burn rubber in a terrifying future filled with mystery, action and shadow-drenched emotion. Get ready for the ultimate in street horror. "

Artist Cory Smith also discussed what it feels like to "ride a shotgun" with Percy behind the wheel:

“I am incredibly excited to ride the shotgun with Ben Percy as we bring the screaming Ghost Rider into its 50th anniversary,” added Smith. “As a comic and horror nerd, Ghost Rider has always been a favorite of mine, so this project is a dream come true. Johnny Blaze, the spirit of revenge is BACK. We are firing on all cylinders and I can't wait for everyone to see the hellfire we are bringing! He's about to go crazy! "
