Mazinger Z (Mazinger Z in the Japanese original) is one of the most important robots created by Go Nagai in 1972. The animated series produced by Toei Animation, was broadcast on Rai Uno in 1980 for a total of 51 episodes, but in reality in the version original were 92, therefore the passage that links it to the Great Mazinger, a series previously broadcast on various regional television stations. The Mazinger Z series is also linked to that of Grendizer as the pilot Ryo Kabuto (Koji Kabuto in the Japanese original) is actually Alcor, Daisuke's friend who drove the TFO flying saucer. Having to give a correct order to the events narrated, first comes the series of Grendizer, later Mazinger Z and finally The Great Mazinger. Compared to other Japanese robots, Mazinger Z is perhaps the smallest since it is "only" 18 meters high, just think that the Great Mazinger measures 25 meters.

The story begins with an expedition of scientists among whom we find doctor Kabuto (Japanese) and doctor Inferno (German) who go to the Greek island of Rhodes, for an important archaeological find. They discover that the ancient civilization of Mycenae, thanks to a sophisticated technology, was able to build mechanical monsters. The evil Doctor Inferno gets hold of these secrets by killing his colleagues, but Doctor Kabuto manages to escape and return to Japan. Here the scientist invents a very powerful steel alloy, called Superlega Z deriving from Japanium, a particular metal found near the Fujiama volcano, with which he builds a gigantic robot, which he will call Mazinger Z and will have the purpose of contrasting the Hell's army, ready to take over the entire planet. However, Dr. Kabuto is murdered by the Iron Masks, the assassins of Dr. Inferno. Ryo Kabuto comes to his aid and before dying, the scientist entrusts his grandson with the task of piloting Mazinger Z. Ryo receives instructions from Professor Yumi, his grandfather's colleague who is in charge of the photoatomic energy research institute. To give a hand to Mazinger Z there will also be a second robot with a female appearance called Aphrodite A, led by Sayaka Yumi, the daughter of Professor Yumi. In addition to them will be added a clumsy and clumsy robot called Boss Robot and led by Boss, Nuke and Mucha, three thugs in love with Sayaka, who try to show off to distort her from Ryo Kabuto, combining a sea of trouble and hilarious gags. Ryo Kabuto will have to be able to fly the Glider (Hover Pilder the original name) to be able to fit inside the head of the gigantic Robot. It will take some time before Ryo perfectly learns the docking maneuver, but once he has taken command of Mazinger Z he will be able to defeat his enemies with his very powerful atomic weapons. His first enemy is Baron Ashura, a being half man and half woman, which Doctor Inferno created with the union of two mummies. Even more monstrous is Count Blocken, a former Nazi officer who walks with his head on his arm, having been transplanted with a cyborg body; he commands the Nazi army of the Iron Helmets. Between Ashura and Blocken there is a great rivalry, which Doctor Hell does not hesitate to exploit for his evil purposes. The enemies will try on more than one occasion to attack the same laboratory of Professor Yumi, which will resist thanks to a protective barrier deriving from photoatomic energy. From the laboratory pool, the gigantic robot Mazinger Z will come out, on which the sliding glider piloted by Ryo will be placed. Mazinger Z will be able to fly thanks to thrusters on the feet and retractable wings on the back, run at a speed of over 350 km per hour and swim in the deep sea. It will be able to fire missiles placed on the belly, photonic rays coming out of the eyes and cyclonic rays from the mouth, which by lowering the temperature will turn into freezing rays. Like Grendizer, he can fire punches and armor-piercing missiles, often swinging his arms to give him more power. Another powerful weapon is the Photon Beam, which emanates from the red plates placed on the chest, from which it releases a powerful heat capable of melting any type of metal.
In one episode we find the robot Kingdam x10, of Doctor Inferno who projects images of Mazinger Z while destroying cities, this in order to make him intervene and make him waste all the energy to weaken him. Once there, Ryo realizes the deception and fights the real Kingdom x10, defeating it. Later, Doctor Inferno tries to make Mazinger Z fight on two fronts: with one robot he calls him back to a fight in the open field and with the other he attacks the laboratory. Thanks also to the temporary help of Aphrodite A (actually not very precious) who shoots missiles from the breasts, Mazinger Z manages both to defeat the first robot and to arrive in time to save the laboratory from the dangerous threat.
Later Mazinger Z will have to contend with Duke Gorgon (not present in the Italian series) an emissary of the infernal army of Mycenae who has a human torso on the body of a tiger. Its power is such as to abandon the army of Doctor Inferno to side with the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Mycenae, the ancient civilization that took refuge in the bowels of the earth and that now wants to take back the earth, after being awakened by Doctor Inferno. . They will be the new enemies that Mazinger Z will have to face and being much more powerful, they will put our hero in serious difficulty. The Great Mazinger will come to his aid piloted by the young Tetsuya, who will be able to defeat the army of Mycenae and lay the foundations for the second series: The Great Mazinger.
