Oggy and the damn cockroaches: Next Generation, the 2022 series

Oggy and the Cockroaches: Next Generation (French: Oggy et les Cafards: Nouvelle Génération) is a French animated series produced by Xilam Animation for the Netflix streaming service. It is a reboot of Xilam's long-running animated series, Oggy and the Cockroaches . Like the original series, it focuses on Oggy's wacky antics and the trio of mischievous cockroaches that inhabit his house. Aside from the titular characters, the series also introduces the addition of seven-year-old Piya, an optimistic elephant from India who unwittingly adds to Oggy's daily struggles.

The series was first released online on Gulli's streaming services on November 8, 2021. However, it was billed as the eighth season of Oggy and the Cockroaches. The series had its world premiere on Netflix, on 28 July 2022. In India, it also premiered on Sony YAY! on October 24, 2022 with the title brand new season of Oggy and the Cockroaches .

Unlike Oggy and the Cockroaches Next Generation episodes are 43 minutes long with six segments each. The series subsides noticeably compared to Oggy and the Cockroaches , with a focus on Oggy's friendship with Piya. However, like the original, the reboot still lacks actual dialogue - characters often express themselves in a variety of noises.

The voices were provided by Hugues Le Bars, within reused sound clips for the eponymous characters – new recordings were made for this show due to his death in 2014, and Kaycie Chase as Piya, the last of the whom he also performed the opening theme. Vincent Artaud, who also became the new composer of the original (season XNUMX onwards) among other Xilam titles (such as Zig & Sharko), also returns as composer for this incarnation. Due to the show's lack of dialogue, he only has one voice acting.

History

Oggy is an anthropomorphic cat living in the modern suburbs, who shares his home with three trouble-making cockroaches – Joey, Dee Dee and Marky – who usually wish to drive him crazy in various ways. Oggy's Indian friends are also on vacation, accompanying his daughter; Piya, a 7-year-old elephant, will be his new roommate. While Oggy will also have to contend with being his new caretaker – and by measure, father figure, the cockroaches will use his fun-loving and caring nature to their advantage.

Characters

Characters from the original series had received changes for this reboot: while Jack, Bob and Olivia are now minor characters, Oggy and Olivia's relationship remains vague (as they were married in the original's season XNUMX finale), Kevin (a new character) now lives with Bob, and some characters have received personality changes, some of which have been redesigned.

Main characters

Oggy – A dimwitted, but protective and loyal father figure. He is a blue cat with black detachable ears, green eyes and a red nose. In this incarnation, he has matured considerably as he no longer cries over minor things, although he still freaks out easily. He is especially protective of Piya and all of her precious possessions, which are all spun. Oggy likes to fish and does it in a distant lake. He is the cockroaches' main archenemy, by which he is easily annoyed. He is also Piya's current guardian, seen as her uncle – he even met her when she was still a child.
The cockroaches – The eponymous trio who live with Oggy and often irritate him. They're not as absurd and extreme with their antics as the original incarnations, but they're still as mischievous as ever. They no longer live in a garish and dirty looking bedroom, but rather in clean ventilation pipes. They still roam freely through Oggy's house quite often and follow him wherever he goes, usually to make trouble and steal food. In some episodes the cockroaches are a little gentler (e.g. A Day Out, The Birthday Truce).
Joey - The leader. He has one pink left eye and one yellow right eye (a slight change from his original design), a light purple head, and a pink body. Though he's the smartest, he can get too anxious about his latest prank. He is not as fiery or greedy as the original incarnation.
Marky – It has curly antennae, pink eyes, light green head and gray body. He assists Joey and Dee Dee throughout the series. Like the original episode "Baby Doll", he remains foolishly in love with Piya's doll in "The lost doll", to the point of annoying the other cockroaches.
Dee Dee – Has light green eyes, a big orange head, and a fat blue body (so much plumper than her original design). She mainly assists Joey and Marky throughout the series. He is also usually the most greedy of cockroaches, to the point of eating unpleasant or otherwise inedible things.
Piya – An optimistic and playful Indian elephant. Peach pink and fat build, he wears a pink and yellow shirt, with dark brown hair tied back in a braided ponytail. She usually acts like a typical little girl, but she is also a neat freak with a fear of spiders. She is also protective of anyone and anything. A variety of gags revolve around her midsection, both as an extra hand and to blow strong winds. She is Oggy's "granddaughter" and sometimes the cockroaches' playmate, mostly unaware of what they do with her - until they take her too far or get her in trouble with Oggy, usually forcing her to turn against them.

Recurring characters

Jacks – It is a green cat with a red nose, a gray muzzle and a salmon belly. He is Oggy's cousin and Piya's "cousin once removed".
Olivia – She is a white cat, one of Oggy's neighbors and his girlfriend. In this incarnation, she is redesigned to look more lanky, but also lacks her yellow bow. She doesn't love nature like in the original series.
Bob – He's a large brown bulldog with a red spiked collar, one of Oggy's neighbors and Kevin's uncle. He is brutal in nature and dislikes Oggy very much. In Dog Day, whenever Kevin was gone, he missed him to the point of constantly sobbing over anything that reminded him of Kevin.
Kevin – He is a small orange puppy with a blue nose and Bob's nephew. Kevin sometimes makes fun of Oggy, but agrees to challenge himself to get a fishing badge in "honor of the scout". In Dog Afternoon, he also hates going to school.
Piya's parents – Indian elephants – one greyish blue and one greyish purple respectively – which are very large to the point that their faces are not visible. Since they literally left Piya at Oggy's house, they've gone on vacation for a long time. They are easily entertained by Oggy (as a distraction from him) when they come to check on their daughter, in "Please Wait!". Oggy thought they were overprotective about minor things, like Piya had an injury.
A grizzly bear – He lives in a forest far from the city. He lives carefree unless provoked, as he can become comically aggressive. He once interfered with Oggy and Piya's camping trips.
