PERSEPOLIS

Persepolis is the intense and compelling tale of the maturation of a young girl in Iran, during the Islamic revolution. It is through the eyes of a nine-year-old girl, precocious and extroverted Marjane, that we see a people's hopes shattered when fundamentalists take power by imposing veils on women and imprisoning thousands of opponents. Intelligent and fearless, little Marjane bypasses the social control of "law enforcement" by discovering punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. But after the senseless execution of his uncle and under the bombing of the Iraq / Iran war, fear becomes a daily reality to deal with. Growing up, Marjane becomes more and more reckless, and her parents fear for her safety. So, when she turns 14, they decide to send her to study in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a distant country, Marjane is faced with the problems of adolescence. In the meantime, it must also fight the prejudices of those who identify it precisely with that religious fundamentalism and that extremism that forced it to flee. Over time she manages to be accepted and even meets love, but after high school she finds herself alone and with a great nostalgia for home. Although this means putting on the veil and living under a dictatorship, Marjane decides to return to Iran to be with her family. After a difficult period of adaptation, he enters an art institute and then gets married, without ever ceasing to denounce the hypocrisies he witnesses. At the age of 24, however, despite feeling deeply Iranian, she realizes that she can no longer live in Iran. This is how he makes the dramatic decision to leave his country for France, full of hopes for his own future, but indelibly marked by his past.

Marjane Satrapi was born in 1969. She grew up in Tehran, where she attended the French School and continued her studies in Vienna, before settling in France in 1994. In Paris, some fellow designers introduced her to the Atelier des Vosges , an art studio that gathered the best contemporary cartoonists. In her first comic book, Persepolis 1, published in France by L'Association in November 2000, Marjane told the story of the first ten years of her life, up to the overthrow of the Shi regime and the outbreak of the Iraq-Iran war. . In Persepolis 2, published in October 2001, he recounts the Iraq-Iran war and the years of his adolescence until his departure for Vienna at the age of 14. In Persepolis 3 and Persepolis 4 he describes his exile in Austria and his return to Iran. Later, he published Taglia e Cuci (Broderies) and Pollo alle prunes (Poulet aux Prunes). Persepolis, written and directed with Vincent Paronnaud, is his first feature film.
