On February 21, 2013, a new edition of the most famous puppet of all time arrives in Italian cinemas. We are talking, of course, about Pinocchio who, this time, comes to life thanks to the direction of Enzo D'Alò (already known for the Seagull and the Cat, Momo to conquer time ed Opopomoz) which, however, manages to give the evergreen fable a note of originality. The animated film was born from a successful collaboration with the famous designer Lorenzo Mattotti and with the great musician Lucio Dalla who not only contributed to the soundtrack of the film, but also lent his voice to the green fisherman. Among the other actors who voiced the characters in the story, we find Rocco Papaleo (Mangiafuoco), Paolo Stefano Ruffini (Lucignolo), Maurizio Micheli (the Cat), Pino Quartullo (carabiniere), Mino Caprio (Geppetto) and Gabriele Caprio (Pinocchio) . The film is distributed by Lucky Red.

The Pinocchio told by D'Alò closely follows the original story of Collodi, both in the typically Tuscan setting, and in the inclusion of minor characters that in previous versions of the fable had been forgotten.
The film begins with the run of a lively boy chasing his kite; suddenly, however, it slips out of his hand and disappears into the sky. That kid is Geppetto, in an unreleased version that we had never seen before. Years pass and on the window of his house he finds that famous kite, lost so long ago. Geppetto is now an old carpenter, a bent man wearing a red toupee that contrasts curiously with the long white beard. That very day he hears a log of wood talking and, tired of his loneliness, he decides to use it to build something unique. Realizing that this is not the usual piece of wood, he creates a puppet who, somehow, can take the place of the child he never had. Not only.

In the silence of his home, Geppetto, thinks of his childhood and his youth and in building Pinocchio, he retraces the stages of his life, reflecting on what he did not do and on his regrets. In the puppet he pours all of himself and in the end he dresses it with that brightly colored kite, as if he wanted to combine the past with the future in that way. But as soon as you give the last touch to Pinocchio's face, he comes to life and starts jumping here and there in the little old man's room, even making fun of him; then he escapes outdoors in a Tuscan countryside, made up of valleys, vineyards and hills, of tree-lined avenues with secular pines underlined by the decisive even if apparently childish features, very different from the environment that had characterized the previous versions, especially that of Walt Disney.

But Pinocchio is still a brat who rebels against every institution and who never stops, runs everywhere, often makes trouble so serious as to put him in danger. He even gets to burn his feet in the fire for his carelessness, even if the good Geppetto is always ready to excuse him and put everything back in place. Through these misadventures, which apparently teach him nothing, Pinocchio begins to understand the value of love and respect for his dearest people and for his father who adores him, even if the way to become a model "puppet" is long. In the path that accompanies Pinocchio in his "growth" appear lesser-known characters such as Alicampo, a dog who befriends the protagonist, the green fisherman, with little reassuring features, or Arturo, a schoolmate with whom he ends up in a fight.
In fact, like all the other children in the town, Geppetto enrolls Pinocchio in school. But how could he, always on the move, stay still and follow the boring lessons? Precisely for this reason he always looks for a thousand excuses not to go there; he pretends to be ill or tells his father that he doesn't have the abbecedary to study like other children and with every lie he tells his nose stretches as if by magic. But despite everything, once again the poor old man, who wants to make him a good child, sacrifices himself. In this case he sells his only jacket to buy him the book.

Pinocchio, struck by this gesture and really wanting to become more obedient, starts to go to school, but on his way he is distracted by the music coming from a theater and so, intrigued, he sells the book to buy the ticket and enter to see the show . On the stage there are puppets like him, who as soon as they see him begin to party and call him on the stage. So he finds himself in the midst of Pulcinella and Arlecchino making confusion as always, but this time there is "Mangiafoco", the puppeteer, who, very annoyed, threatens to throw Pinocchio into the fire. Yet even inside that huge, colorful and frightening character, who occupies the whole scene with his figure, a heart beats that is moved by hearing the story of the puppet. Enough to deliver the coins in his hands to take to Geppetto and thus allow him to buy back his jacket. But despite his great generosity, he makes a mistake because he entrusts the little rascal to the Cat and the Fox, just to prevent it from falling into the hands of unethical people. And so the three go away, Pinocchio happy to be able to bring the money to his dad and the other two ready to trick him and steal his coins. Along the way, the Fox convinces him that it might be possible to have many, many more coins to bring to his father so as to make him even happier and richer. Talking, talking, they end up in a tavern where Pinocchio gets drunk, sure that he can even have a tree of coins after planting the few he had on the ground, in the famous Campo dei Miracoli. This time the poor puppet would really like to make his dad happy, but his naivety costs him dearly and a nasty surprise awaits him.

The meeting with those two rogues, in fact, even risks costing him his life since the Cat and the Fox, to steal his coins, hang him from a tree. But there is the Blue Fairy who, together with Jiminy Cricket, a Crow and an Owl, takes care of him and saves him from yet another prank. The Fairy, in this case, is a little girl like Pinocchio, very different from the one represented by Comencini or Disney. There her figure was maternal and protective, here, instead, she is the person to whom the puppet is perhaps most attached, and towards whom a feeling very similar to love is born.
After being saved, he walks home, but not without incurring other misadventures so that with every lie he tells his nose keeps growing more and more. Yet he seems to be really convinced that he wants to become a good puppet, he also goes to school trying to learn as much as possible. But temptations are always known to be around the corner, especially for a curious character like him. What about, for example, the meeting with classmate "Lucignolo"? once again his curiosity gets him into trouble. In fact, by chance he meets his friend who is waiting for a wagon that will take him to the Land of Toys, a fantastic place where there are no schools, no prohibitions of any kind and the only thing to do is have fun from morning to night. Naturally Pinocchio joins him and together they reach this country. There they have fun like crazy but suddenly they realize they are turning into donkeys day after day. Candlewick already has two large and pointed ears, hidden under a long hat and Pinocchio is about to suffer the same fate. The truth is soon discovered: all the listless children, in fact, were taken to the Toyland and there, after being transformed into donkeys, they were sold at the market.

So Pinocchio is bought by a circus owner who makes him work hard, making him jump and perform in his show. The poor puppet bitterly regrets his choice but, unfortunately, it is now too late to back out. One day he becomes crippled and no longer serving in the circus he is thrown into the sea to meet an even worse fate. In the water, however, Pinocchio becomes a puppet again and, trying to save himself, is swallowed by a huge shark.
In the belly of this terrible sea monster there is a surprise waiting for him. He finds, in fact, the poor father Geppetto, who long before, desperate for his disappearance, had gone to look for him with his little boat and he too had been swallowed by the shark. Here, perhaps Pinocchio's true transformation takes place. From selfish and superficial he becomes, in fact, a responsible character who takes care of his father, until they manage to escape from the shark's belly and Geppetto, exhausted, completely abandons himself in the arms of his puppet who promises to bring him to safety. And for the first time he's not telling lies. The two find themselves on the beach and Pinocchio, with this gesture of generosity, is transformed into a real child by the generous and tender Blue Fairy.
The story, based on the most famous fairy tale of all time and brought to the screens after years of second thoughts and changes, is masterfully animated by one of the greatest designers of the moment, Lorenzo Mattotti, who set the story in the midst of landscapes that look like gods. paintings, colorful and imaginative yet so similar to the Tuscan countryside and the villages of those lands, perched on the hills; certainly a very familiar environment in Collodi. The viewer is literally kidnapped by the animation, by the often exaggerated colors and characters and by the traits that may seem simple and childish but which conceal a particularly deep and careful study. Real landscapes that alternate with surreal, often psychedelic, environments. All this undoubtedly captures the attention of children but adults cannot help but notice a certain rush and, perhaps, superficiality, in the narration of some important parts of Pinocchio's story. When you see the film, you have the impression of leafing through a great book in which the task of telling the story is entrusted to illustrations rather than words.
After the death of his father, it was fundamental for the director D'Alò to focus the whole film on the close relationship between parent and child, and on how often fathers want to forge their children according to their expectations, trying to do this with them. which they themselves could never become. Pinocchio, on the other hand, is not obsessed with becoming a real child as in previous versions of the story.
Particularly moving the soundtrack of the cartoon not only because it represents the last work of the great Lucio Dalla, but also for its depth and for the importance it assumes in underlining every single passage in history, making it almost a musical. His attachment to this work is testified by the fact that he also wanted to voice a character.
